I picked up some coolant today and fixed my leak at the water pump housing... I drained as much old coolant out as I could... ( gold stuff ) The stuff I picked up is the Prestone heavy duty diesel stuff (ELC) that is red in color... Is it very important to get every bit of the old stuff out ????? Will the 2 coolants have a reaction to each other if there's a little bit in the system ????
I've filled the system with distilled water and ran it today with that in it.... Just to cycle as much of it through !!! I'll drain that and fill again with distilled water... run with that in it... and then drain and fill with the new red ELC !
Will this be good enough ??????? Also I've looked all over for instructions on how to make your own filter system !! Does anyone know what you need to make the kit yourself.... I'm sure I can make one up instead of buying it !!!
That should get it plenty clean to load up with the red koolaid. No idea on the filtering system. Good luck Russ
Thanks Jay.. I figured that would work... I'm going to get that filter in there soon as well... I have a bit of sand in my overflow bottle so I wonder what else is in there !!!
The sand crud is SCA drop-out from the older coolant. The ELC doesn't have SCAs to drop out, so as long as you did a good flush, you should be good to go without a filter. Nothing wrong with putting one in, but it probably won't catch a whole lot.
Most coolant filters have a DCA additive in them. If it is going to be used for filtration purposes only, get one without additive, ELC is pretty good stuff by itself.
The ones from Dieselsite seem to be the non charged ones. Which is good because I am already using them. Russ, what is the bill for doing the coolant change? I want to do this soon too, coming up in miles here.
I almost gave wrong info. You are ok with the red stuff. Dont put that stuff in around 2000 or older. The seals in the heater core and other seals in engine do not like it for some reason. Also older equipment seals have a problem with the red ELC because of the organic acids in it.
Yours being a 2003 should be OK using the red stuff with the OAT additives.
Read the back of the jug to see what kind of additives are in it. Some of the ELC coolants just have a higher concentration of DCA in them.
I can try to find msds sheets for Prestone to see what kind of additives are in it.

Not telling you !!! You've got enough money... just get it done !!
I've not heard of the older trucks having problems with ELC. In fact, several 99s are running it on this site with no problems. Here is a good blurb on ELC/OAT coolants:
"Organic Acid Technology or OAT's are coolants that are formulated without the use of silicates. Since silicates have a short life, removing them allows a longer service life. Typically, coolants advertised as 5 year, long life , extended life or Dex-cool are examples of OAT's. Common components to OAT coolants are Carboxylate, sebacate, and 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), which are corrosion inhibitors, used instead of silicates. Depending on which manufacturer is filling the jug, the inhibitors may change. Dex-cool uses 2-EHA which among other things is a plasticizer which has the effect of softening plastic. GM intake manifolds are made of plastic........... If it is found that Dex-cool is dissolving the gasket material, it will validate what some folks have been saying for a long time: Dex-cool eats gaskets. We'll see. Prestone doesn't use 2-EHA in it's long life coolant, instead uses carboxylate."
From this site (an EXCELLENT read, but he pushes green coolant): Antifreeze
Wait... Red Prestone has SCAs??? Oops -- that's good to know. It's not a TRUE ELC then, no more than the Gold stuff I have now. It's a Hybrid-OAT -- is that what Prestone calls theirs?
EDIT: Since you deleted your comment, I'm assuming the answer to my question is "no". True?
I've got the Peak Final Charge. No SCA's to worry about. I haven't heard of any problems with switching to it. I'm keeping my coolant filter, since it's already there. Still got an extra filter.
Know what? there is no reason to be an ********* about this. I Made a mistake, it happens. I misread an msds sheet. Now you are calling me out on it. Sorry oh great one. I have years of heavy equipment experience, too bad it isnt ***** pickup truck experience like you. Yes, I drive a 7.3, but I would love to drive a 793B,C,D, or a Komatsu 930e, heck even a Terex Unitrig 5500, but I feel nobody really wants me in one of those on the road.
Now if you were just trying to razz me it worked. If you wanted to make me leave the site, just let me know and its done.
I appoligize to everyone else for the way I am acting on this post, but I have already removed the post that I put up that was misinformation. I am sorry, but all that really needed to be done was to say "Hey, you have the wrong info", not to be an A hole about it.
It has been a while since I worked for Ford, and I may have forgotten a thing or two, but I do remember that the ELC coolants and the T444E and the PSD had leaks, but I have moved on to bigger and better things.

NO need to be this way !! Especially on one of my posted questions... We are all here to learn and there is so much knowledge on this forum that it makes the people at ford look bad....
Of course no one wants you to leave the site... thats not what this place is about..... Lets just drop it ! I'll make my own decision on what I put in my truck on this matter !
