THanks gents, I understand the motor electricity for sure now!
The whole entire cluster is not working. NO guages work, no lights work, nothing. The tow/haul indicator and the 4x4 are in the cluster. Although, the backlighting for the cluster is working, but with no action from any of the guages etc. The temp, mpg, etc in the headliner is working and is working properly at that.
I did not test the fuses with a meter. I am supposed to "jump" the fuses with my voltmeter and test what? What ohm loads am i looking for? Or am i simply looking for continuity across the fuses to test that they are not blown. Right?
ALso, i am confused about any fuses, relays that may exist under the hood. Where?
I think before you can do much for your 4x4 issue, you will need to diagnose and fix the console. The console is actually a computer module on our trucks. Much of what it displays comes to it via one of three data networks from various other computer modules. My initial thought is that it's not getting power and without power, nothing in it will work. Except illumination but you probably already figured that out.
Regarding the fuses, you are simply looking for continuity across the fuse pins.
There are no fuses under the hood on a 2004, at least not on a diesel with a manual transmission (mine). I don't believe there are any on any 2004 though. The only thing under the hood you are interested are the two shift motor relay's. They are identical relays together in a box, on the passenger side, towards the rear. I believe on some models there is another box with relays, but I believe the relays in that box are not the same as each other.
If you need more help locating the relays, let me know and I'll go out (tomorrow) and find mine and snap a couple of pictures.
A way to test the relays is simply to switch them. As you can tell from Krewat and I's exceptionally detailed and lengthy description above, if one relay is bad and the other isn't, it'll go in, or out, but not both. Switching them will reverse this problem and isolate the relays.
However, until you have the console working, it's going to be very hard for you to know if it the gear motor is or isn't working.
What is a GEM? Why would it all the sudden malfunction while the truck was running, operational, etc. Did my year model even have a GEM? How do you test it? Where is it? etc etc etc. For the first time in awhile i actually need the truck and the 4x4 and it's laying down on the job.....VERY frustrating!
Sorry guys, I didnt see the diagrams. It's getting late and i've got the strep throat so pardon me. Thanks again for the help. First thing in the morning i am going to test continuity across the fuses under the dash in the cab drivers side. Given they all check out, i will then test the relays. Hopefully, there is a blown fuse related to the dash relay and i can see if the Tcase motor is actually working. Again, i really appreciate all the insight. See you guys in the am!
Chamberlain, Krewat, Thanks for all the insight. I finally got under the dash with a test light and checked continuity. Surenuff, as soon as i hit fuse with the light and it didnt check out, pulled the fuse and blown! I replaced that and all is well. I cant remember the number, but it was the 10amp on the bottom right of the panel in the cab third from the right. All is well except for the tow/haul button, which i believe is another problem entirely. The wires that are routed through the shift selector have broken before and have now broken again. Guess i'll have to schedule an afternoon to fix this....again! Thanks for helping me again!
