For 78bigunns, the difference between shorties and long tube headers are obvious from looking at them. I've heard that long tubes give you better top end performance. The downside (which doesn't apply to your truck) is that many of them are not EPA proofed, ie they won't pass some states EPA inspections (exhaust gas or visual inspection). You may have more interference issues with long tubes too. Most shorties will pass the scrutiny of the EPA, plus, they can bolt on to the stock exhaust system. Long tube will require some new parts or fabrication. Shorties also come in equal length and unequal lengths. The equal lengths look like spaghetti and supposedly give you better power (slight improvement), but unequals are easier to install and a little cheaper - Used to be anyways.

I always thought the "H-pipe" was synonomous with Off-road use only (read non emmissions legal). Heck, the cats on my Mustange are plumbed into exhaust pipes that are shaped like an H, but its not an "H-pipe". The balance tube gives you better mid-range. H-D used the same technique to bolster their engines output years ago when the increased noise standards choked down their V-twins. It appears (to me) that the X-pipe is another way to achieve the same exhaust balancing technique as an H-pipe without infringing on patents. Maybe another way to market the same thing? It also adds to the BS sessions waiting in line Friday nights at the drag strip.

I have a set of three chambers Flowmasters on my Mustang and am happy with them. Two chambers were too loud for my taste. I don't know about the new nomenclature of Flowmasters. My car did have the 2000 rpm drone with the flows at highway speeds (3.08 gears), but when I changed to 3.55, the drone is not there anymore. Turn-down tips will drive you nuts after a while.

For your truck, I'd run an h-pipe (no-cats), 2.5 all the way back, don't use down turns. Once I decide to fix my leaky exhaust manifold on my doolie, thats what I will do. Buuut, I will use hi-flow cats. My two sons just love my neighbors red '93 CobraR (w/H-pipe), but they say "it stinks". My exh tips will be out at the rear corners like my 'Stang. I think they look good sticking out the back of the truck, but the exhaust would burn my legs when launching/retrieving the boat.

Road_dog had it right about the sound. Now if you had two trucks running like this side by side, you'd almost sound as good as a healthy boat.

Nomenclature? That is naming compounds in Chemistry dude. Not different kinds of Flowmasters. LMFAO

Hey powderdud460, you're a riot too.

Just a couple of comments.....

nomenclature: A system of names. This applies to WAY more than chemistry, dud. I know you weren't in my Organic Chemisty classes.

I've got an idea.... if you can't add anything of value to this page, start reading about chemistry compounds (LOL), rather than snorting them.

Later ...... dud

Oh, and the good news is, today was a beautiful day in the Metropolitan DC area; and not only did I winterize the boat, I got some riding time in on my "old" XT500 w/White Brothers 540 kit that has a Great looking tailight as viewed from an EX400! lol

You're right man. I have no knowledge about go-fast parts or old Ford trucks. I have just grown up in an ALL FORD family and worked on dirt track cars and drag racing trucks for about 4 years now. Plus I'm only 16 and teens are dumb right? Let me just tell you about my latest wonderful machine I bought the other day. 1968 Mustang with a crate 302 stroked and bored to a 340. Ah, never mind. It only cost $6700 so I must be on crack right? I had to give up my 2001 Honda 400EX for it too so that must have been a mistake huh? A 4-wheeler for a classic Mustang. Gosh what was I thinkin? {Peace}
