the manual says to build pressure by turning key on then off then back on about 4 times to build pressure. It works as described and builds to 25-35 peak, but it won't hold. what does that indicate?
Well if it won't hold fuel pressure & with your low mpg figure, then I'd suspect leaky fuel injectors.
So maybe consider a good cleaner upper like Chevron "Techron Concentrate Plus" at the specified oz/gal treat rate, added at the pump before filling up with Chevron, Texaco, or CalTex gas, which already has Techron in it.
This will raise the treat rate about 10X that of pump gas & may help if the injectors are gummed up.
AutoZone has had a good deal on the 12oz size of Techron, which is free after the rebate!!!!
If the fuel pressure regulator is working properly & it has vacuum to it, the fuel pressure should drop 3-10 psi below the KOEO figure, after starting the engine.
If the KOER pressure doesn't drop after the engine is started, then remove the FPR vacuum line & apply 10 inches of vacuum to the FPR with a hand pump.
If the fuel pressure Doesn't drop, suspect the FPR.
If it Does drop, then the FPR is likely ok, so suspect the vacuum control source to the FPR.
The tank of gas i was using when I replaced the FPR netted me 15.5mpg. Already an improvment over the 11mpg i was getting.
The tank of gas i just used up netted me 18.5 mpg. Replacing the FPR greatly improved my mpg. No check engine light anymore either. My guess is that 18.5 is as good as it'll get.
Well with the vintage of your ride, your altitude up in Prinston WVa, the cold time of year & winter gas, 18.5 mpg is mighty good MPG imo.
So I'd guess the high fuel pressure you had & maybe leaky fuel injectors that wouldn't hold FP after the FPR change & the fuel system cleaner upper, have all worked together to tweak up your MPG.
BTW which fuel system cleaner did you decide to go with????
Well Autozone has a special on Techron Concentrate Plus, buy one 12oz size & the rebate makes it free!!!!
Texaco, Chevron & CalTex fuel already have Techron in it, so if you add more at the prescribed treat rate, that'll raise the level to about 10x that of pump gas & it'll tidy up the intake side, injectors. or carb, combustion chamber & piston crown, all for just postage to send in the rebate!!!! Not too shabby of a deal!!!!
