7.3L Cold Start

I am posting a video just to show those people who say an IDI won't start well in cold weather. I recorded this a couple of days ago but just got a chance to post it because we haven't had power for a couple days.

The truck had been sitting for a week without being started, it was about 5*F outside and a you can tell from the outside of the truck it was frozen over pretty good (stupid ice storm). This was the first attempt at starting it and the block heater had not been plugged in. It was truly a cold start.

I have 2 older batteries, about 3 years old, new battery cables, New starter and altered factory glow plug wiring bypassing that stupid connector that likes to melt.

I am really pleased with the way the swap all turned out. I will be glad to get the rest of the truck finished, like finishing up the paint prep so I can get it painted and get the bed back on, weather allowing.

When you say you bypassed the plastic connector did you just bypass the two black/orange or yellow wires around the connector?

Yeah I bypassed that connector because it was already getting hot and melting. And I have seen several trucks where it melts the whole connector and that leads to lots of wiring problems. I went ahead and just ran the wires around it so that I could get good voltage to my glow plugs, if it is getting hot enough to melt the connector then there is quite a bit of resistance there stopping current flow.

Are you saying that you bypassed the fusible links that are in the wires that power the GP's? If so, you may want to just replace those fusible links. If they are getting hot, that means one may already be blown and all the power is going through just one of them.

It was getting hot because the connection at that connector was kinda crappy and when I got the engine to put in my truck it was already a little melted and did not want to come apart. Both fusible links are good, I ran a new wire and soldered then into it.

Not a 7.3 connector, but still the same one and same problem.

That one is in a rather advance state of deterioration.
Looking at the wire colors, not even sure it was from a diesel engine truck.
