anti theft

i live in an appartment complex and i like to let my truck run for 5 or 10 minutes to warm up in the morning. i have a spare key so i can lock the door and leave it running. the problem is if someone really wants the truck they can bust the window out, get in and drive off. how can i quickly disable/enable the truck so that it can't be stolen?

A good question. How about a micro-switch, mounted under the dash and held closed by the brake pedal lever. The fuel shutoff solenoid would be wired thru it and a toggle switch wired in parallel with it and mounted, say, in the glovebox. Then with toggle switch off when the brake pedal is pressed the engine would shut down.
Just a thought.

They'd never figure that one out before you could run out in you tighty-whiteys and pull them out through the wing window.

there are remote starts that can be used with diesels, my plan is to get one of these, they have a built in thing that causes the vehicle to shut off if anything is done without the key in the ignition (brake or gas pushed) ... i was assured by the installer that they DO work with diesel rigs ... even though you have to let the glow plugs warm for a few seconds.

I would also consider one of those locking bars that locks the brake and steering wheel together.

Most likely you aren't the only one that warms up your vehicle for a few minutes. Someone looking to do a smash n grab wants to be fast and quiet as possible. Just the visibility of that type of locking device is going to deter probably all but the most determined so they will bypass yours and onto something else.

My buddy has the remote start on his dodge and he likes it. Same idea, he can start it with the remote, but needs the key in the ignition before it will move. Pretty slick system if you have the extra money. Is it ok to start with the block heater still plugged in?

Don't use the looking bars there not as strong as ya think. Not only that but ya need something quick and easy or your not going to use it. The switch idea posted by Lazy K seems to be the best do it yourself idea so far. Unless you want to buy a premade one. The only problem with theft deterent devices is all they do is deter theives. Remember a lock only keeps a honest man honest.

What I'd like to know is how those remote starters operate the high idle, or they completely ignore it?

What transmission do you have?

If it is a manual, you could put a switch on the clutch linkage.
On the transmission shift linkage if it is an automatic.
Or the throttle linkage or brake pedal for either one.

5-10 minutes will not warm it up unless it is well above freezing.....

Better to get in and just drive........

I slip the transfer case into neutral and the transmission into 4th. This keeps the transmission oiled and will fool someone long enough that I could catch them in the act. I do this in the morning and if I stop anywhere in town where I would leave it idling. Only works if you have a 4wd though.

When I hear the fast idle kick down, it is ready to go. May take 10-15 minutes on the coldest days.

that would work with an automatic also right?

it would keep them busy until you catch them!

the OP posted that he has a spare key and that is what he does, he's worried that because he lives in an apartment complex someone will smash his window and roll out with his truck ...

as for the high idle, i dont think the remote start messes with that, it still works the same way with gasoline engines, so i dont see why it would be any different for a diesel engine. IMO the remote start would be your best bet, seeing as how you can also get the keyless entry for it as well if you dont already have it. electric locks will only run you around $50.00 per mechanism, and instalation would be covered along with the instalation of the remote start.

as for the Auto vs Manual, i had remote start installed on my F150 with a 5spd manual tranny, you sign a waiver stating that the installer and manufacturer is not responsible for what happens if you start the truck with it in gear, and they bypass the clutch switch that is required for starting your manual. some places prefer not to do it, but there is no laws that i'm aware of that state you can not bypass the clutch mechanism.

The biggest problem with remote starts is they can not set the high idle, you have to pat the throttle to do that.

With a manual tranny, forget to leave it in neutral one time, that could be very bad.
