What color smoke is it? Could be a couple of bad glowplugs, or more likely, a bad injector.

How cold is it where you are at?

Lots of white smoke right after starting is normal with very low temps.

No spark to ignite the fuel, a cold engine does not burn the entire fuel charge in the cylinder.
So white fuel smelling smoke is the result.

A glow plug that is not working will cause that cylinder not to burn the fuel very well until it warms up to the temp of the other cylinders. If an injector has a bad spray pattern or is dribbling fuel out, this will lead to unburnt fuel as well and cause a lot of smoke. If an injector is leaking fuel it will cause a knocking due to the predetonation, this is exaggerated by the cold Advance, which would explain why you don't notice it as much once it warms up.

is it abnormal for a 7.3 to not smoke? my 91 F350 doesnt smoke at all when i start it, only time it smokes is when i hammer on the skinny pedal, and thats only a puff of black smoke and it dissipates. ive got all new plugs and injectors in it, and no oil gets burned. i remember my folks had a '95 PSD that smoked like a chimney when it would be started and when they were on the throttle.

the 7.3 shouldn't smoke an oil smoke, it has the "positive" style valve seals which let very little oil past them (valve guides absolutely hate this tho). As far as fuel smoke goes, it will only smoke as much as you want it - mine used to leave off occasional puffs of dark smoke when I'm accelerating at low rpms in OD, I've since turned the pump up a bit (less than 1 flat actually) and now under the same conditions it smokes more, but nothing like a hopped-up Cummins or DuraMax, and oddly enough it now getts better fuel economy, 18mpg freeway vs. 16 before. Strong startup puff and lots of low-rpm smoke is typical for the mechanically-injected turbocharged engines, they are designed to work with the turbo so until it spools up they're overfueling a bit, which is why you see the older 18-wheelers smoking for the first few seconds after every upshift. The PSD should not smoke like a chimney though, it has electronic injection which takes into account how much boost you have to determine how much fuel to dump, maybe someone has messed with it through a PCM chip or something?

get that cross over fixed that might help some of your smoke problems then check glow plugs then injectors then start thinkin of oil.

Black smoke is to much fuel for the air.

Have you changed the air filter recently?
