Bought the wife a 99 Expedition, and have some questions on the exhaust system. There is a sensor downstream of the cats, where the y connection is. What is its purpose? The cats will soon be replaced with straight 2 1/4 pipe, then Y into 3" back through an aftermarket muffler. What affect will this have on the mystery sensor? I can deal with a service engine light, but if the computer has any other reactions, I will have to figure out how to fool it, I guess.
Thanks in advance-
It is indeed part of the emmissions system. OBD II to be exact. It tells the computer that the cat is functioning properly. The check engine light WILL come on if the cats are removed. Other than the light on and the computer storing the code I don't think it will cause any other problems. One problem you will have is that if some other system fails you won't know because the light is already on. I believe in some Mustang circles they have made a resistor of some sort to fool the computer. Besides being illegal, I doubt there will be much power to gain by removing the cats. If the vehicle is under warranty, Ford may void it.
Has anyone tried this? Good point about the Check engine light masking another 'real' problem...
Would like to know if the missing cats and check engine light would affect drivability, or just trigger the light.
Thanks for the response....
My friend with 98 Mustang GT had the same problem with the O2 light being on after doing some exhaust work done. He did finda device that will take care of the light but remember that hollowing your cats out will void the warrenty so it might be a good idea to wait until your warrenty expires before you try it.
