hey guys, im new to the ford tunes and am wondering what will be best for my v10.i will be towing a toyhauler so anything that will be the best for that would be great or just all around driving.im not a fan of the handhelds because you can get more out of a custom one.and also the best of intake you guys recommend.and about the new dry filters as well.thanks in advance
i had a diablosport predator and i was satisfied with the horsepower gains. i sold the truck about 2 months back , (went diesel) and kept the tuner. all the tunes were taken off the old truck so its ready to be used on another. id take 200$ for it. i used it on a 99 f250 v10 so you would have to look into if it would work for you....... as for the rest, i ran the aftermarket y pipe to a high flow cat and flowmaster 40 series muffler. im pretty sure the y pipe was probley the best thing i did
Talk to Mike at 5 Star Tuning. Not only is he the sponsor of this forum, but he tows with a V10 and seriously knows his stuff.
TB spacer: Don't bother. 0 benefit on MPFI engines.
CAI: Stock already is CAI.
It looks like you have a 2000? If so, you likely have the pinched Y-pipe rather than the ramshorn. Take a look. If it is, many report noticeable help from new Y pipe.
Other than the Y-pipe, most typical bolt ons provide very little bang for buck on the V10. The factory did a very good job.
Several report noticeable bang with intake, headers, Y-pipe, muffler, custom tune. But the bucks add up!
I went for the 80/20 solution. How to get 80% of the bang for 20% of cost?
Intake: I like the stock with clean paper element. The only significant restriction was the inlet snout (from behind grill into airbox). I modified the airbox inlet snout from the stock 2.25" to 3.5" by gluing on the snout from a 3V airbox. Not as flashy as an aftermarket, but I guarantee it flows within a percent or two as well at towing rpm, and cost a whole lot less.... Like the cost of 1/2 a tube of JB Weld.
I have '99 ramshorn style factory Y pipe, so left that be. I had Mike do a custom tune. New fuel injectors. New COP's. New sparkplugs.
That's it. She pulls hard. I would advise you start there, unless you really need to spend the $$$. The economy would appreciate that!
Ypipe mod is about about the best bang for the buck. I like my K&N intake but Volant makes a nice one also. I think the Volant has a dry filter. I would avoid any intakes with aluminum intake tubes, they will suck in heat. Steeper gears are another good upgrade, expensive but worth it. I really like my Thorley headers but they are pricey.
What gear ratio and what size tires do you have?
I really like SCT products and am using an XCal2 on my truck with a 5star tune. zYou won't gain hardley any power with an 87 tune but the trans will work better, the A?F ratio will be corrected, the truck will be allowed to go into open loop at WOT and other things also. Can get tunes for different octane fuel also, of course higher the octane the more power.
Good call on the gearing, dkf! I forgot to mention that!
If you have anything other than stock diameter tires and 4.30 gears (look at tag on rear diff), then re-gearing is also seriously good bang for the buck when it comes to pulling power.
Most seem to come with 3.73 gears. You have to let these engines rev higher than your average big block for maximum pulling power - 3500 rpm and up.
GR$$N$
We can definitely help with any of the V10 tuning needs. I prefer custom as it adds the flexibility for changes down the road for you. As already mentioned gears and ypipe are great additional mods as well.
thanks guys for all the input.mike i will be pming you right after i write this.as far as upgrades i havnt yet checked my ypipe but i will in a few minutes.ive ordered headers, volant intake, and i already have a glasspack muffler.if the ypipe needs to be done then that will too and the tune will be soon as well.other than that if thats not good enough then a diesel upgrade will have to be necessary
The 2000 still had the non ramshorn y-pipe unless it was replaced with the ramshorn y-pipe under a TSB due to flutter (I think this is the only reason why some 2000 have them and some don't). Mine still has the non-ramshorn y-pipe. You'll have to look at yours and see which one you have. It will make a difference if you decide to replace the y-pipe.
1999-2000 y-pipe (unless replaced):
2001+ y-pipe:
I got these images from a ebay seller called spd-performance.
The stock horns are okay, just not as free flowing as a y-pipe and imo minutely affect performance possibilities. If you decide to replace the horn with a y and do, make sure to reset the pcm by pulling the negative off the batt, turn headlights on to drain any residual charge in the line and wait at least 15 minutes before reconnecting so the puter can relearn the new air/exhaust flow. Unless of course you have a programmer then it's a push of a button to reset!
