I was looking for a brake controller for our 95 F250 to pull our 2 horse trailer. I was looking at the Prodigy or P3, since it seems to be very popular, but on Tekonsha's website, they say that the inertial controllers are more suited to pulling horses due to constantly changing load conditions. Ideas? Thanks!
Rob
The regular prodigy would be great. I like the Prodigy for horses because it releases the brake power far better than the older models, eliminating that "snap" you usually put the horses through every time you come to a halt. The Prodigy seems to drop its power as you slow down, almost coming to 0 as you stop. That makes for a far easier trip for the horses!
any general opinions/experience with brake controllers? how many types are out there and what is best for hauling horses? i tow a 96 Bee tagalong with a dressing room (about 18 ft and 8100-lb max rating) with the truck in my sig
we used an odyssey pendulum style on my daddy's expedition...recommended and installed by a reputable local trailer garage. i will most likely install a new one on my truck myself.
I think the Prodigy is about the best there is, other than a few very high end expensive models. I've towed a lot with the prodigy and rarely if ever is there any jerking. I've pulled with a few other models and with every one of them you could feel the brakes grab and release when you used them.
The prodigy is an inertial controller, very much like the pendulum one that you described, except instead of a pendulum it uses solid state inertia sensors. It is also very easy to mount (figure out where you want it and put in two screws), and wiring is as simple as buying the pre-wired harness to plug into the truck.
