I knew the infamous blown plug issue has been out there and supposedly rectified, but it seems Ford has a new solution to the problem. In researching spark plugs for a planned supercharger install, I found it very difficult to find plugs for my 2008 5.4. Here's why, a totally new plug.
Note where the plug threads on these plugs. Will it be problematic? I guess we'll see.
Actually...I don't think those are the plugs for the 2008's...i believe those are the plugs only for the 2004-2007.5 year...late 07 got a new head design that used a more conventional plug
Well, it seems Autolite's listing is wrong for the 2008. Here is a pic I found of the old and new plug next to one another. New plug is on top. Ryan was right. I still need to find a colder version of the new plug.
catmonkey, do you you have the new 5.4 heads or the old?
that picture up in post #1 is the HT0 plug, and so is the bottom plug in post #5
the Autolight HT0 is the correct plug for the 04-early 08 5.4 3v and 4.6 3v motor. They are 1 heat range colder than the OEM PZT1F plugs that are in the 06+ motors.
Pretty sure the Brisk plug is the same heat range as the HT0 plugs
My head has the new plug. At the present time, it looks like Motorcraft is the only source for the new plugs. Autolite shows a listing for 2008, but it's the same plug used in earlier 3v heads, so their application guide is wrong. I got a good education in plugs used by Ford in the modular motors doing this research. None seem to have been "better ideas". I'm sure the aftermarket will make a plug sooner or later. Doubtful before my install takes place. If anyone hears or knows different, please let me know.
I contacted Brisk today and they are making a plug for the new head in two heat ranges. They're sold out, but are getting more plugs in next week. It's just not on their application guide as yet.
If you've got a number for a colder heat range, I have no problem with Motorcraft. So far, I've only found the number for the stock plugs I already have. I was hoping to find one range colder. I haven't placed an order yet. I wanted to get more information on plug when I do get around to calling. So far my contacts with Brisk were by e-mail.
I'll be buying some parts from Troyer, but I'm going to work with VMP on the tune. Roush says to use the stock plug. I'll see if Justin has a recommendation.
I don't know how compatable their respect mods are. I'm not looking for maximum horsepower, just a good, safe, streetable tune. I'll post my results but it's going to be later this summer. They're trying to put together a dyno tuning session in Houston, otherwise it's a long drive to Florida.
