I have been looking for an Ex for a few weeks now and have test drove 2 7.3's and 2 gassers.
Both PSD's were 120K (Miles) and 150K (miles).
The gasser I tried alst night was a 2000 (one owner) and was in really good shape with 120K.
It seems to me that the gassers actually drove better, felt tighter then the PSDs (maybe the weight of PSD causes quicker wear on suspension).
The v10 from last night was filthy inside (6 kids) but overall the truck was in really nice shape. The price was right at $9000K canadian about $7200 USD.
A few issues, brakes squeaked and were not awe inspiring and there was a buzzyness in the exhaust which the owner claims the dealer was never able to rectify. It also felt like the 4x4 (4 H) transmitted quite a bit of vibration through the system - more so then the 2 wheel mode.
I was originally set on a PSD but now I am leaning more to a v10 as all PSDs locally are easily 50% to 90% more.
I will probably go back for a second look (it was dark) any thoughts on the buzzyness?
I am not an expert but 120K seems to be a lot of miles on a V10 especially with some known problems already. PSD or gas depends on what you want out of it. I would definately hold out for a better option with the V10 you drove. I just got my V10 03 with 11,500 miles for under $15,000. Right now the deals on these big beasts should be really great.

What are these "known problems" that are related to mileage? I am not aware of any besides the "plug popping" that isn't even in issue anymore on 3V V10s and some 04+ PI heads.
My '99 V10 truck has 149k and has only blown two plugs due to improper torque from a gorilla that worked at a "precision tune" that the previous owner had brought it to. I bought it with 28,000 on it and havent had a single problem since 32,000 when the last plug popped. My last truck was a 6.0L. In 80k miles I went through three frozen turbos, a head gasket and EGR cooler issues up the wazoo. It cost me $300 to fix the blown plugs on the V10, the 6.0 would have cost me $2000+ each time it broke. Thank god I got rid of it before the warranty was up. Now it's someone else's problem.

I have heard about the blown plugs here on the forums. I have the v10. What exactly do you mean by popped plug?
I have a 31' 10,000lb travel trailer that i pull with mine, it does great. I think it has alot to do with the gears as well....i have the 430's
The threads come out, there are only 2-3 holding the plug in. Most side-o-the-road repair places will overtorque the plugs, causing damage to the threads and the plug pops out.
Pretty small in comparison to what can go wrong with diesels.
We're in Canada too. Same needs - weekend and holiday use only. Bought our Texas imported 2002 V10 a year ago. Absolutely great condition compared to those we'd seen around here. It's a real shame what our climate and roads do to vehicles in a few short years.
And in one comparison, (I can't remember the year or details now) the diesel was around $32,000 Cdn vs about $20-21,000 Cdn for the V10.
The problem is that I am planning to use the Ex about 6 weekends a year to haul my trailer.
I currently have a f250 w460 and need more room for people.
Locally there aren't many low mile ones (I am in Canada) and spending $15-$20K is out of the question.
Might need to go stateside for a better deal.
What kind of relatively trouble free mileage can you expect from a v10?
How far are you willing to go to look at, get one, and what shape are you looking for.
There is one here in Prince Rupert, 2000, VERY low kms, she has a fairly good size gouge on the passenger side along the back end centered above the back tire. I had seen it when I started to look for one, tried to contact her but failed to, and about 1 month ago she called me wondering if I was still looking for one. I could get more info if your interested.
Definitely think you will get better deal in the US, supply vs demand... Esp the V10... with current gas prices and economy, folks just run the other way if they don't know a lot about the engine...

I was referring to the problems he was experiencing with the truck that he test drove.
