My neighbors 10 year old got his foot ran over yesterday playing by the tracks. He is very lucky to not have lost his foot. He broke a bone and needed steel pins to repair the damage. They also amputated his little piggy. The doctors said he will fully recover due to his age. On another note, I almost needed a hospital myself. I ran about 200 yards and carried the boy another 60 yards over three sets of tracks and a canal. Picture bo derek's chest in ten, and david hasselhoffs slow motion run in baywatch...That was me in full speed. Has anyone else been so lucky?
My understanding is he fell running next to the train and his foot went into the track. The police told me that he said he fell and his foot went between the track and the gravel bed. The weight of the train pushed the track down and pinned his foot.I think he and the other two boys tried to jump on the train. His shoe and sock were thrown off of his foot. His foot was in one piece but a bit mangled. He was very lucky. His mother finally showed up and began chastising him for being by the tracks. I told her it was unimportant now and if she would have been watching for him it may not have happened.I honestly have expected him to be hit by a car because they let him go where ever he feels with no supervision. It sucks to think that way,but I kind of flipped when my wife told me he had been hit by the train. I did things I had know idea I could do and hope I never have to do. I would not let the child go until I knew he was better off with the police. I am not real close to the child, but we kind of bonded. It still seems a little strange.
Well as long as you don't dream of him tonight, picturing him covered in sheep fur and chasing him with giant velcro gloves. Now if that happens tonight..you have problems

No,but had a friend of the family get his thigh run over trying to hop a freight train his leg was saved(I don't know how it wasn't cut off) and you could see the shape of the wheel looking at his thigh. It was a common thing to hear about someone getting killed or hit by a train in our neighborhood when I was a little kid.
Kids will do dumb stuff no matter how good the parents are. It's impossible to watch an 10-year old boy round the clock. My parents never could have kept up with me at that age. Fishing, rock-climbing, bike-riding, hide and seek, and that was just on a Saturday morning!
My brother-in-law was a pizza delivery driver when he tried to beat the train and was drug 800 feet down the tracks in his 74 Nova. He survived, but really he didn't. He's been a vegetable since. That was 1988.
