I haven't seen LED headlights yet, or any LED lamps for that matter that will approach the output of a 60w halogen bulb for anything close to the same price, something like this would cost $50-75 a piece I bet. HID is a popular upgrade but it's also expensive. The cheapest thing you can do is install a headlight relay with heavier power cable directly off the battery, this makes a noticable difference in brightness apparently.
Here's a LED light that will impress you. These are NOT cheap however, but WOW do they throw light!!! (Although not suitable as a headlight, obviously.) Grote Industries: Product #63571 - Spot, NEW I have never seen any halogen light this capable... plus they produce very little heat and won't break a filament.
On the HID front... am in China right now and at the buyers market the Bosch ballasts and chinese bulbs kits, dual beam, are selling for about $125 canuk dollars. (Whether or not HID or HIR or good old halogen is up to the nut behind the wheel.) I sorta think HID is not a good idea, but at this price I'm dumb enough to buy one and play with it off-road. If it works... great. If not, it can go on the shelf beside those fancy H-4 things I got for the YJ that didn't work worth s**t!!!
