I have a 2006 6.0 96,000 miles I suspect a bad upper alternator, with multimeter truck running shos 13.8 to 14.5 volts disconnect lower alternator and voltage drops to about 11, with top disconnected it and lower on voltage comes back up. Also have always noticed that when first starting truck cold headlights would be a little dim, then after a short time they would get brighter. I noticed when checking this out that the lower alternator didn't start charging right away I'm thinking this is why I am seeing the change in the lighting. Thanks for any help, Dave

The glow plugs stay on for a time after starting, the lights brighten up after the glow plugs shut off. Your alternator likely starts charging right away but struggles to overcome the power draw of the glow plugs.
The alternator charging is delayed by the PCM when the glow plugs are activated. This protects the PCM from a possible voltage spike. Your alternator is fine if it is charging about 13.7 to 14.4 volts, after the glow plugs have been shut off. The glow plugs can stay "lit" up to two minutes.
