I have a 91 F-150 xlt lariat 302 auto E40D everything is basicly stock. i was hopeing for some ideas on how to get more power out of it. It's set up for hauling right now but i still want more power for when im not hauling. i know right off that when i go for dual exahust im gonna put on shorty headers but other than that i have no idea what else to do. i don't want to get into anything real expensive(being a student i have no money) but some things i might beable to save for in a short time.
I understand money problems to! There are so many modifications I would love to make if only I had the money!
You can get a set of shorty headers for pretty cheap, I got my Summit truck shorties (Pacesetter) for about $160. They will make a decent power upgrade at a reasonable price and allow you to easily keep your EGR. They bolt up to the factory y-pipe, which is nice because you do not have to fork out the money for a new y-pipe immediatlly. However, the factory y-pipe is really restrictive and you will not realize the full potential of the upgrade to headers without replacing it. I waited a few months to save up money before having a mandrel bent y-pipe made for my truck. If you get the summit headers make sure to check them for defects prior to installation. ine were good and have a nice 3/8" flange. Also throw the gaskets they come with away and buy a nice set of Copper ones when installing them.
I would avoid duals your truck and instead install a nice 2.5" or 3" max single. This will be better for low-RPM power. Mine is a custom 3" with a high flow cat and a Flo-Pro V7 muffler. It sounds real good and did not cost me any low-end power.
Long-tubes are better, but they also end up being more of a PITA to install and end up costing more money. I wanted long-tubes but ended up going the shorty route until I restore the truck fully and rebuild the motor when I have finished my college degree and have money to get a real nice set of long-tubes (stainless).
So go for the long tubes i mean if im gonna do it i want to do it right the first time i don't wanna spend money now just to replace it later with something better with the money i could of spent on something else that needs attention.
go with some long tube headers. and get a mandrel bent y-pipe. it will help with power. then after that go with a cam. it will really wake the 302 up. You aughta be happy with exhaust and cam. if not get a 351W. then that'll solve your power problem with one quick swipe.
i personally love my 351W. i had an 82 F100 with a 302 and it aint shizzzziiittt on the 5.8 but then again the 302 was carbed. but my dad has a 95 F150 and he drove my flareside and he said mine would blow his out of the waters. like badly
Yeah, I have drove a few of these trucks with the EFI 302, one even had long-tubes and exhaust. My 351 pulls way harder than any of the 302s I have driven.
Well for right now an engine swap is out of the question, lol plus it's already be replaced once before by my dad but i'll keep the swap to a 351 in mind. how much would the new cam be and what kind would be best
