A 61 F250 4X4 was designed to pull a train and top out at about 50-55 mph. An overdrive would work well as long as you have the umpth up front to pull it.
The last time i checked on putting an overdrive in a truck was about 15 years ago and it was in a 76 chevy 4x4 1/2 ton. it was about 850 bucks back then. if you decide you wanna go that route keep us posted as i would like to do the same but my truck is not a daily driver so that puts it in the cost prohibitive range. kinda like would love to do that but. Dutch
it has the stock 223 I6 in it. use it to haul farm stuff and commute too and from farm, home and shop. where is the best place to look for an overdrive setup? also will the trans from a s10 or mustang hold up in this application when hauling or pulling trailers?
I think you might find fitment to be a real concern. Nothing is going to bolt up without expensive adaptation added to cost of the tranny. This could run into some big bucks, then the little I6 may not have the gonads to deliver through the overdrive.
I would advise caution, the cost may not come close to being recoverable.
The problem is the differential ratio, my 61 had a 5.10:1 gears. Even with the ol 292 screaming, I could only do about 65 mph. I would look at dif. gears, crappy work to do but it will get you geared higher for cheaper.
5.10 gears, wow. My '61 F250 4x4 has 4.56 gears. I know mine won't go fast. I am not building it for the speed. I am going to enjoy it anyway.I checked my specs book and there was no option for that ratio. Did someone change it?
