Here's what I'm getting, this is similar to what I was getting last year.
2003 FX4 4.6L 3.73 gears
14.4 mpg at 60 mph 1600 rpm
13.3 mpg at 70 mph 1900 rpm
Outside temps are from 0F to -10F.
Since I put my tonneau on I now get 16.0-16.5. For this comparison tire sizes also need to be taken into account. For whatever reason I do not get better or worse mileage in the winter or summer with my truck, it also doesn't get any different in town or on the highway. Almost everything else I drive does but for some reason the truck doesn't and I keep precise records at every fill up. The only difference in my mileage will be the wind, since we can get 80+ mph wind here for 9 months of the year.
1997 5.4L 3.55 265/70/17 (taking the stock tires into account my effective gear ratio is around 3.33 with those tires)
no wind 16.5mpg
wind 16.0mpg
Temperature makes no difference, it has been from 60*F to -10*F over the last week, but the truck seems to run best around 50*F
About right overall without tight controls measuring fuel mileage vs terain, fuel quality etc.
I have a monitor to watch certain parameters and found in very low temps in the -7 to 0 ranges that my IT does not track my console temp until just above 0. The IT readout is about 4 degrees lower and usually reads right on or sleightly warmer in warmer temps.
This may mean that the IT is out of tolerence below 0 and may be tending to overfuel the motor a small amount.
It would take a selective IT sensor and much testing to prove one way or another between the two parts.
Just to illistrate that there can be tolerences affecting what any one vehichle gets for fuel mileage.
My 2wd 4.6 auto gets about 15 to 16 mpg in town now and I blame it on the ethanol in the gasoline. My mileage dropped in town from 17 to 15 and fuel consumption increased on my riding mower, motorcycles and atvs.
I blame the crappy fuel!
