I have a 2001 F-250. I have no power back at the trailer receptical. Can anyone tell me which relay under the hood is for the trailer receptical. There are two pairs of relays beside the big box of fuses. Is there a way to use an ohmmeter to test a relay to see if it good or bad?
A normal relay will have five terminals. The ones marked 86 and 85 are for the coil. 30 is the pole (what your controlling), then 87a is connected to 30 when no power is applied to 85 & 86. When you power and ground 85 & 86, the 30 terminal connects with 87. To test the relay, put your DMM or OVM on the 30 and 87 terminals, then ground the 85 and apply power to the 86 terminal. With power across the coil, you should read very low ohms on the 30/87 terminals.
To test the coil, it should take 200-750mA (hopefully more toward the 200mA.) Use the Amperage setting on the DMM to test the draw. If it doesn't draw or draws more, the coil has shorted.
