On my '96 ford F-350, There is a grinding in the front end. It does it in both two and four wheel drive. It seems to do it less in four wheel drive. If it starts grinding, it can't be stopped by putting it in 4wd or 2wd ( What ever it isn't in)It seems to start after I go over bumps and it will last from any where from 5 seconds to over a minute. Sometimes I have to pull over.I replaced the wheel bearings a couple of months ago, Could they be improperly installed?Could the spindles be cross threaded? I was told that the spindle bearings may be shot because I was having problems with the hubs locking in and unlocking ( See pics). Can anyone shed some light on this. Thanks
This is what the hub looks like alone. See how it is angled up to the top left? Had to hold the hub with a screwdriver to get it to be right angle. Spindle bearings shot? Would that cause the grinding? How hard is it to change the spindle bearing? Thanks
I have the same problem... I have a '94 F350, D60, Auto, and your problem is exactly the same as mine. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.
It was the spindle bearing. Call your local napa now and see if they have p/n BK6. It is the bearing and two seals.
Pull off wheel, then remove hub/spindle nuts and then the rotor and all that stuff. (Caliper, wheel bearings etc.)
There will be 5(I think) 17mm nuts on the spindle. Pull them off and then pull the spindle off.(easier said than done) I had to use a porta-power to get mine off.
Make sure your other bearing is out of the hole, mine wasnt. Had to use a chisel and get the other one out.
