ok, picked up a 82' F100 this weekend for $1000. Specs: SWB, 302 (unmolested), auto tranny, super clean interior, ext. is good. Truck was bought by a farmer in 82' to be used as a farm truck, he didn't end up doing that for to long from what i am told. Truck ended up sitting in his barn and got driven off and on. The guy i just got it from bought it some time ago, put 2000 miles on it and then let it sit in his driveway with the occasional drive to the store and what not. Overall this truck is pretty nice and i think i got lucky with it. So with all that said I have a few questions about these trucks. 1) The truck says "explorer" down the side of it, any significance to this? 2) What are some comin issues with these trucks, if any? 3) Does the truck have any computers in it (i am thinking no)? Also, I am wanting to do some mods (of course) to the truck. Would like to put a nice cam, carb, intake, header set up on it. What are some good combos for these trucks? I am obviously not going to be racing the truck, but I do want a cam that will thump pretty hard. Anywase, thanks for any ideas or tips guys!!! This forum is very informative by the way!
1) The truck says "explorer" down the side of it, any significance to this? That was a option package to help sell the truck.
2) What are some comin issues with these trucks, if any? rust, sticking parking brake cables, brake booster fails, keyswitch sticks, dash lights are dim, gas tank rusts, brake lines rust, , did I say rust?
3) Does the truck have any computers in it (i am thinking no)? Look at the distributor. No vacuum line means it has a computer. Look at the carb. More than one or two wires going to it means a computer

You need to figure out your rearend gear ratio. This is a heavy truck, so if you go too radical, you will need a stall convertor and a higher number rearend ratio. A small dual plane intake with a 600cfm or smaller carb and a rv cam will work with no other modifications.
never mind on the performance question, refreshed the page and then saw your answer to that. what rear ends are pretty common in these trucks? yeah, don't wanna have to do stall just quite yet
They can be really low, down in the 2.80 range, all the way up to 3.55 with a smaller truck like yours. If you have the really low rearend, you don't want to get too radical. Look on the door jamb and see what the code is for the rearend.
The Explorer was a limited edition options group and package from 1968 to 1986.
Each year the Explorer Pickups were made were different, and they featured their own unique factory striping.
They were produced only a few months out of the year, and they did not feature in the main sales brochure, they had their own special sales brochure when they were avaliable.
A clean 1982 with it's stripes intact is very rare actually. Most of the time the factory stripes would have been removed or the truck repainted long ago by now.
You can see pics of the different year Explorers in my Explorer gallery, as well as my own 1981 F-150 Explorer.
plans for the truck as follows: 15" wheels from a 94 or so truck with some thick rubber, buff & wax, flowmaster exhaust dumped, edelbrock or so intake with 4 bbl carb, headers, mild cam, double roller timing chain, upgraded dist./coil/wires/etc, flex fan, and more as i think of it...tint the windows...

Be careful here... somewhere in the early-mid 90s Ford switched to a Metric bolt pattern,
those wheels won't work for ya. Again, be careful, find out exactly when that happened
and be sure your "new" wheels will fit.

They switched to metric in 1997.
However 1980-1983 F-100's could have the smaller 5x4 bolt pattern which will cause a problem in itself.
Most all Ford half ton pickups from '48 to 1996 used a 5x5 pattern.
The Exception is the 1980-1983 F-100. If it's got power brakes, then it's most likely got the 5x4 bolt pattern.
well as far as the wheels go, i will just measure the bolt pattern and go from there. finding wheels wont be an issue (i hope). for the year of the truck, when i pick it up this weekend i will verify the year and all that jazz. thanks for all the input guys, pretty knowledgable guys around here (impressive).
As for mods, i would put a 2800 stall, shift kit, comp cam what ever grind you want, a edelbrock Air-gap RPM intake a Holly 650cfm 4bbl carb. full MSD ignition. I had that on a 351w in my 83 LWB and it ran mid 13's on motor and mid 12's on 125 shot on gas. have fun.
Looks like it could be a nice Ride, having owned and friends that have owned 82-84 100's and 150's with the 302 auto you will benefit from a few up grades as they were very short on power in stock form,as was stated check you rear end gears, you would want at least 3:55's or higher if it is to be a DD anything lower would be a wast if you want performance on the street. As was stated a good RV cam, headers, and intake with a 600 vac secondary carb and a good tune up will wake that 302 up then I would also get at least a shift kit installed with a good tranny service and don't forget the brakes you need to stop that beast and if it's been sitting you really should go thru them first.
