So I would like to replace the entire exhaust system. With the following parameters in mind, does anybody have some suggestions?
1. Does not sound like a rice burner.
2. Is not too much louder than stock.
3. Any gains in HP, response or MPG would be great.
4. Emissions legal.
I suppose I should tell you which vehicle. 2006 F250 V-10.
Just straight pipe it after the cat. Thats what I did to my 08. Sounds good to me. And from reading the past posts, I don't think that after market headers are worth the money.
Honestly, the stock system is very, very good so getting any significant hp or mpg improvements is going to be extremely difficult. Most folks change for sound, and then wish really hard for power/mpg changes to justify the expense. Going bigger should help top end power a bit, but may hurt low end torque and freeway mileage. Ford really did get some things right with these engines.
So if you want to go for sound, just admit it and fuhgettabout rationalizing it!
Is your truck long bed or short?
Mine is long bed, and the 10 year old stock system is getting a bit ratty. I want a little more "soul", but hate loud or resonance. My plan is to try a Flowmaster BB50 (the biggest and quietest FM). I am concerned that every FM I've ever heard has an unpleasant (to me) metallic twang. Using acoustic theory, I think it is higher frequency harmonics escaping the resonance chambers. And any in cabin drone is unacceptable.
To reduce both, I'm going to try putting a short race-style absorption bullet muffler right behind it to absorb the high frequency overtones. Call it a resonator if you will. With a long bed, I can fit both if the bullet is short enough.
Flowmasters catbacks are aluminized steel and about as inexpensive as your going to get for a cat-back. The bends are good but the clamps that come with arn't too great. If the stock exhaust is in good shape I would just replace the muffler only and keep the stock pipe and add an exhaust tip. Banks and Magnaflow also make very good cat-backs for the V10.
I've got the FM70 on my 2V and put it on and it was too quiet for me so I welded shut a chamber to make it louder. The FM70 is a pretty quiet muffler and is a little louder than stock. I don't notice a tinny soud to it either.
I have duel flow master delta flow 40 series but had to put spiral flow mufflers in front of them to quite them. sounds really bad with just flowmasters.
Thats because you used small FMs with little capacity. Use a larger case muffler like the 50SUV or 70BB2 and they sound good. Size the muffler right for the sound you want or you'll have to add a bandaid.... like extra mufflers or a resonator.
