Get a bottle of Diesel Kleen and get on the interstate and run it! It will clean itself out after a few times. There was a post out there about a week or so about fuel additives. I belive in them, been giving my sd and ex a shot when ever I fuel them up. I know I posted before I put close to 500 miles on my 99 sd everyweek, not so much on the ex. I usually one of three things in the tank. Outboard motor oil, new transmission fluid or Diesel Kleen. Have been doing this for at least 2 years and had now problems. Good luck and let us know what you do.
Follow up post:
Added Diesel Kleen before driving up to the mountains last week. Drove up to Copper Mountain, 200 miles round trip. Computer said I averaged 19.1 mpg. I've now put about 500 miles on it and my hand calc's have me at about 15mpg, with 300 miles of city driving. I feel better now. Also, I aired up the tires to 60psi rear and 55psi front.
Also, I added twice the recommended amount, and just added twice the amount again on this fillup. I don't know if it was the highway driving, the higher air pressure or the diesel kleen, or a combination of all of it, but I'm feeling better about the MPG now.
15 sounds much better with 50% or so city driving. I'm only on my 3rd fill-up and so far I am at 14.5ish with all local driving.... no freeway trips longer than 10 miles yet... you can find my X at fuelly.com Keep using an additive every tank and from diesel Kleen documentation you there is no harm in running more than the recommended mixture.
Are u converting to Euro or US gallon?? Didn't know they sold Excursions in Europe... Or did you have it imported?
1,4 liter / 10 km . Yes they sel Excursion i Norway , but price in 2001 was 860.000 Nkr = 122.000 USD ( high tax . weight x hp x cui = tax in Norway ). Price for a new EX 2.100.000 Nkr = 300.000 USD. But a 2.nd hand Ex 2000 mod. abt 25.000 USD , low price due to high gas and diesel price . ( 1 liter 1,6 USD )
Wow $300,000 for an Excursion !!! Boy I guess we don't realize how spoiled we are in the USA ... I was so shocked at the price I even double checked it on the yahoo currency converter and its correct!
Now I am curious what the actual vehicle cost is and what all the fees and taxes cost.. is there a big import tarriff?
Wow - old thread..!! Just got back from a road trip to San Diego. 5 adults, 3 kids, plus all the "stuff". 75-77 mph we got ~15 mpg. 72-75 mph, we got ~18 mpg.. 2000 4x4, Edge Juice + Attitude, in "mileage" mode, Magnaflow exh, AFE cold air kit. rolling on 37's, but the speedo has been corrected for the new diameter. (I verified using the speed readings on my Garmin GPS just to be sure).. These were hand-calc'd.. if I can keep my foot out of it & cruise at 65, it gets an INDICATED 21 mpg on the overhead.. not putting too much confidence in that number - but I would not be surprised to see it get 19-20 hand calc'd at that speed.....

Linc
Hey Linc, that is definitely some decent mileage, good argument to get air, chip and exhaust done. I'm still running all stock, but I'm using Diesel Kleen and my hand calc and the "lie-o-meter" are both coming in at about 17mpg over the last 1000 miles or so I've put on it, and that's about even city/highway driving. Lovin the fact that diesel is cheaper than gas right now where I live, but that probably won't last.
Just waiting for Bill at PHP to send me the files so I can get my Phoenix chip installed and hopefully run his Fuel Sipper tune to see some MPG increases. Had to get emissions done today and rear wheel dyno showed 244HP at rear wheels.... though they just test at 3 speeds for the emissions. They do provide full dyno services so will probably get a real test after I get chip installed to compare and then I can start doing some custom tuning with Minotaur software
I *believe* one can screw up their own calcs depending on how they fill their truck. I have been able to PATIENTLY squeeze in an extra 2 gallons after the first click at the pump.. Probably not the best idea to overfill the tank, but it's next to impossible to hit the *exact* "full" level everytime from tank to tank. Now... If you are consistently filling at 40+ gallons a shot, one or two gallons is negligible for MPG calcs, but if you are topping off every 200-300 miles, an extra gallon or so in the neck can throw off the numbers...
that being said -
While pursuing an Ex for purchase, a lady told me they ROUTINELY got 20 mpg out of their 4x4, and as high as 26. <!> I was not going to call her a liar, as she was a VERY christian woman, but I would say she probably was told by her overhead that they were getting those numbers on level roads at 55-60 mph.... Another friend who has a 2002 4x4 with 30k miles ,hand calcs his mileage, and gets 18-22 on road trips where he keeps his speed constant and USUALLY at or below 70 mph.. I put faith in his numbers, without a doubt.
Not to call you out or anything but I don't think anyone on this forum has ever heard of 25 MPG with an X, no matter what mods are installed.
Does Canada use the European gallon that is 20% larger than the US gallon? or are they on L per 100Km? that would explain the 25mpg being possible and the math errors. but I agree 25MPG with a US gallon .... remember diesel foams up when u r filling so that can definitely make a difference... If you click on my fuelly logo you will see one recent fillup at safeway with crappy mileage.. however the previous fillup at the same station was a different pump where the x was sloping to thje driver side rear and the next was sloping to the passanger side front... so I conclude that I got a couple extra gallons due to positioning of the gas station and sloping angles...

I do live in canada we call it an impereal gallon buddy changed gear ratio and big big mpg increace might do that next but i pull 400 bushel grain wagon so i dont know

I'm in Franktown. I've got a 2003 X 7.3L and the worst I get is 16.2 pulling one of my trailers. About 8500#. The best I've had was 20.8. My overhead display has said 14.2 from the day I got off the show room floor in 2002.
