For those that don't know what Bryan and I are talking about, this is one:

They work great for pumping BIO, WVO, and glycerol. They are air powered so no potential for sparks!

They can also be used to pump bio mixed with Magnesol without the potential for "shearing".

ok, check my math... I though I would dry a small batch with Magnesol to show my partner. Figure 3 lbs magnesol for 40 gallons of de-methanolled bio would be .075 lbs per gallon. .075 lbs would be about 1.2 oz per gallon. I've seen 8 oz bags for less than 2 bucks, so thought I would get 3 of them and be able to treat 2 gallons, or maybe 6 for 4. Just want to make sure I'm figuring this right. thanks

Here are some pictures of my setup.

Biodiesel - a set on Flickr

I pump it from the reaction/settling tank into the water trough that is elevated. I demeth by pumping with heat from a hot water tank heating element installed in line. The settle for a couple of days. 2g/L of magnesol goes in, is mechanically mixed an hour or so, gravity feed through socks to tote, and air pressure through an FSI filter housing with 1 micron absolute filter.

I also pre-treat with glycerin prior to the final reaction and I have very little soap evident after demething and settling.

I don't have the money for ASTM testing, but it looks good and runs good! And you can't beat the ease of using Magnesol once you are set up for it.

Thanks Don. I doubt you remember, but quite some time ago I emailed you about how you handled the Magnesol and you are the one that told me how settling can reduce Magnesol rates and how you filtered it.

That rig has changed a little now as I have a 120 gallon propane tank that I use to inhale the biodiesel (after settling the Magnesol) and then pressure it through an FSI bag filter housing.

So, thanks very much for helping me out!

Jim

Not a problem Jim. That's what we're here for, to help each other out, unlike most of the other bio forums I belong to. I don't post much on the other boards I belong to anymore because there is to much "bickering" going on. I love FTE!

When you re-use your recovered methanol, you obviously have to use more in the next batch to compensate for the used methanol. Do you have a formula of how much re-used and how much new methanol to use in the next batch?

Jim.
If I am doing the math correctly, that equates to about .67 lbs of Magnesol for a 40 gallon batch (151.42 liters) Wow..that is a lot less than the usual 1% that has been discussed. How do you know if you have used enough Magnesol in the batch?

Don.
Do you think that is cutting it a little close and how do YOU know you have used enough Magnesol?
Hope all is well with you.

I can't see how either one is correct............40 gallons of bio weighs 300 lbs (7.5 lbs/gal) At the required 1% that should be 3 lbs per 40 gallons.

If he is using 2 gms/ltr that is only 10.81 OUNCES for 40 gallons. Less than 1/2 a pound/300 lbs. Not enough.............

Everything is great here Tom. I am planing on building a complete bio processor with seed press on a 30' trailer this summer. It will be leased out to area farmers to make there own Bio.

I've had multiple tests done at the 1% and 2% levels and all tests were fine. I've seen where others have lowered their levels somewhat, but I for one don't want to take the chance on making bad fuel. I think I'll stick with 1%.

Sounds good to me. You haven't steered me wrong so far. Keep me posted on how your project is coming along. Will try lowering my mix temp on my next batch and see if I have any luck on recovering methanol.
Thanks Don

Where do you get a pump like that?

Thanks,
