Hello, I've got an 05 350 6.0 that I am definately going to get rid of by August of this year, warranty up and can't afford the constant diesel repair bills.Anyways, I'm looking at alot of different options as far as replacing it. Possibly a newer V10, even looked at some half tons. I really need a long bed and for off road use, which I do alot of, I really like solid front axles. I regularly haul about 8k pounds.I am also considering older trucks and paying cash. Hence, this post.I'm wondering what engine and tranny combos the F350 4x4's offered in this age bracket. Are they Dana 60 or 50 front ends? Also, if you've got any info on what you guys tow and what kind of mpg's you get, I'd like that as well.Thanks.
From 87-96 the autos were C6, AOD, E4OD and manuals were T18/19, NP435, and ZF5 (in that order somewhat). The C6 and later (95+) E4OD's are the best autos, and all the manuals are strong, just the ZF5 is the only one with overdrive. The ideal engine for you would be the later 7.3L powerstroke, great motors. The front axle is a solid Dana 60 on all F350's, with kingpins from '87-'91 and balljoints from '92+. I can't really comment on the diesel mileage, but I'm hoping once all the issues with my 460 are fixed I'll get around 10....
I don't know about the 7.3, I've heard about how great those motors are but sooner or later something goes bad and the cost of diesel repairs compared to gas is just crazy. It seems that any diesel problem is at least two times or more on cost for repair than a gasser.
