I`m looking at a 2000 x it has 175000 on it a k&n air intake some kind of chip (I don`t know what I`m just told it has one)and exhaust system. They want 9995 is it worth it? I will be driving it most of the time, and I have to hall a 7400lb tt.I will need to go to yellowstone in 2010.Do i need to be conserned? It has a **** on the back hvac controls missing and the passenger mirrow is broke. Also I`m told to stay with the 7.3 and stay away from the 6.0.
Where are you located? is it 4x4 and XLT or Limited trim it is a supply and demand issue a lot of places for the 7.3's
you can search and find a weekend full of reading about each of the engines... 175K is not excessive for a well maintained Ex. including service history. Definitely get an OASIS report if u go for the 6.0. the 7.3 parts are easier to find and generaly cheaper than 6.0 parts. when buying used diesels, the engine is not as much of an issue as looking at the suspension and drivetrain components as well as tranny, all the rubber bushings etc.. Rust problems if you are in an area were that is a problem. See if you can determine if its been used to do a lot of towing.... If there is a Trailer brake controller in the cab its a give away... or air bags
Thanks for the reply. I was a ase certified mechanic for 25yrs.All the truck parts I can handle my self,so I will check the front end very well.I don`t know alot about desiels so I have gone to a friend. He told me to stay away from the 6.0.the joke is "they both pull a stump out but, the 7.3 will go on to the next one." I just was wondering if the trucks hold up really well or if I had to worry about things going bad. I will try to get a carfax report. I guess the price is pretty good from what I see on the net.I live in south jersey and will be driving it mostly to work (100m round trip right right now) 2 times a week. But it is for long trips with the trailer family and damn 155lb 1.5yrs old rottie.I have a 2001 yukon xl now but I really want a desiel for towing.
The 7.3's have their issues as well. Most of which can be taken care of by you if you ain't afraid to get a little dirty, (not a problem since you're a mechanic) along with a ton of advice from the folks on here. First thing I would do is remove the intake at the turbo and see if any damage has been done to the turbo. The rubber boot can crack there at the turbo. Also, the K&N setups for these trucks are not what they're cracked up to be. Too much dirt can get through the filter. Another reason to look at the fins on the turbo. I will do a search on here for a thead that spells out what exactly to check when buying a diesel, a 7,3 in particularly.
at work, all that we run is ford e350s/e450s some of the older 7.3 psd now have 270k - 280k, there are ready for retirement ... the frist 6.0s had a lot of turbo issues, one ambulance spent alot of time at the ford dealership. seems the problems have been solved... we are pretty hard on them ... they sit for periods and then it's "hot" out the door. the new psd appear to have very few issues.... www.cartercountyrescue.com
