If I do a full EGR delete kit, maybe from firstcoastdieselperformance.com, will I also need an SCT to prevent throwing a code or going into default mode? Also, the modified up pipe that comes with the kit, is it a pain to install since there is no flex in it? I'm now out of warranty at 102,000 miles and thinking about these mods.
Possibly, but with the store my wife works at closing, and Tuesday being her last day, money will be a little tight until she gets another job. I wouldn't mind seeing how its done, if you do yours soon, I could lend a clumsy hand or 2
My 04 doesn't throw a hard code but the puter knows the EGR isn't getting flow. When it's on a stock tune it has a strange idle though but I chalk that up to injectors.
But what exactly does the SCT do, regarding the EGR? Does it keep the trucks computer from going into NO EGR FLOW default mode where the turbo gives more boost at low rpm's and less boost at high rpm's?

On the '04s it's 50/50 with the CEL. I unplugged my EGR on my '04 with no issues. Just turn the truck off, unplug the EGR and then drive to see if she throws a code.
If you have long skinny arms it helps to reach the upper two bolts, get as many socket extensions as you can find and a second pair of hands will help. Remove the passenger side tire, wheel well liner and the downpipe to make it easier to get to all the bolts and clamps.
The SCT limits the parameters of the EGR functioning. By tuning the parameters out this will keep the EGR from opening and allow the truck to run as if it's a normal parameter. I've had mine tuned out for quite awhile now with no issues.
