I have a F150, scab, sb, 4x4, 5.4 and I would like to add some bolt on mods. I'll probably go with the K&N FIPK air intake. I'm undecided on whether to chip or not but I do want a better exhaust.
My specific question is: Who has the quietest exhaust upgrade. I'm interested in something that will not increase cabin noise when just cruising along. I spend 3-4 hours at a stretch, on the way to skiing, and I don't want to have to listen to exhaust noise. Don't get me wrong. Not too many sounds are better than listening to a finely tuned machine(closer to wild than mild) sitting at a stop light raring to go when the light turns green. But I've already had a couple of trucks(59 f100, 292 v8 w/ 312 heads from a T-bird & a 94 ranger 4.0 w/ a gibson) that sounded great. However they both produced ear numbing sounds on extended trips.
At this point I'm looking for the best performance possible w/o increased cabin noise. I don't mind if it's a lot louder when I get on it but I want quiet when it's in cruise contol. I realize that quiet usually requires compromise on performance and I am willing to compromise(a little) because the truck is pretty powerful w/ the stock exhaust. However, isn't there some middle ground that will be easy on the ears but still provide some relief for my NFS?
Only one i know of is that Gibson single pipe deal. I have the dual sport system, its not bad on the highway, its much louder outside the truck then in the cab on my 95 300/6. With the radio at a normal level you can't hear the exhaust unless i'm towing. The quietest system i know of however is that Gibson single exhaust.
I dont know the Manufacturer off the top of my head, but some of them actually offer a Silencer Package. that way you get the performance without all the noise.
If you request a catolog from Flowmaster they have some very helpful charts and a lot of reading on each muffler. Some are engineered (sp) for quite interior sound and others more agressive. They also include charts on the interior sound on each set up. not to mention its free.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Mar-02 AT 01:21 PM (EST)]I have dual 3" Dynomax Hemi Super Turbos on one of my '67 Coronets. That one has a 10.74:1 compression 440 with a 286/.528 solid lifter cam and a 1050 Dominator. Nothing exotic, and I do not believe in "spray" (nitrous oxide). It has a nice rumble (no tail pipes) and is only loud when I really step on it. The 3700# car's quarter mile ET is slowed down by less than 0.2 seconds (to 12.45 sec.) by the addition of the mufflers. The last time I had it at the dragstrip, I was beating many trailered-in "race" cars with my street car with the mufflers on! Can you say SLEEPER?
I like those mufflers so much, I installed a pair on my '69 F250 4x4 pictured in my photo gallery (link to the left of this post).
When my '69 F100 needs new mufflers, it'll get a pair too.
