I know this is pertaining to the small cars but I wonder if this technology is headed for the superduty?I know there's talk about a six speed auto trans for the superduty's soon.
It looks like for the time being at least that it will only be available on V6 FWD/AWD cars. In North America it will be going by the name of SelectShift rather then PowerShift and will be available on the 2010 Fusion/Milan, Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT.
The 2011 Super Duty is supposed to have the new 6R140 6-speed TorqShift, but it looks like it is unlikely that it will offer SelectShift technology. It would be nice though...
There are six different ratios, but the trans never uses more than than five at a time. There is a 1:1 ratio (5th gear) and a 1.09:1 ratio (4th gear). It NEVER uses 4th and 5th, it chooses between those two based on temperature, pedal position, and speed.

Negative, SelectShift and PowerShift are two different things. (Unless you know something I don't.)
SelectShift is the feature that allows you to manually select and hold a gear while PowerShift is Ford's new dual-clutch transmission that I believe will more than likely be used on the upcoming Ford Fiesta and next generation Focus and probably then spread to other models.
As far as it being used on the Super Duty; unlikely since these dual-clutch transmissions will need some beefing up to handle the HP and Torque delivered by the Super Duty engines as well the extreme duties such as towing and hauling heavy loads realized by the Super Duty.

Looks like you just may be right there. What I assumed was one in the same looks to be 2 different things. I do know that the 6F-55 SelectShift is a new transmission and will be behind the higher level FWD/AWD V6's and will be the only transmission behind the 3.5L GTDI for the time being.

Yeah, good to see that Ford finally joined most other automakers with a manu-matic mode on the automatics.
Anxious to see what vehicles get the new PowerShift transmission.

It will be interesting to see which vehicles end up with the PowerShift. Looking at the current use in Europe and the projected use in North America the main focus appears to be small 4 cylinder cars...
And the Thunderbird.... They're finally spreading it throughout their entire lineup and you know what, they got it right, a push for a downshift and a pull for an upshift.

I worked on those programs, and I fought and fought for push for a downshift and pull for an upshift. I'm glad that even though I'm gone they finally got it right!

I cannot thank you enough!! Better late than never. You probably didn't get any credit either. What was their reason for not doing it the RIGHT way?
Another interesting thing; the new models with the paddle shifters seem to follow PORSCHE!! (possibly a good thing) with two paddles each of which you push for an upshift and pull for a downshift. Car & Driver, MotorTrend, Edmunds, etc. do not seem to like this arrangement in the Porsche, so I'm interested to see what they say about it in Ford's latest.
