What are the negative effects of not driving my truck for up to a month or two at a time? Will the seals and gaskets dry up? Want to keep the miles off it and will be driving the "beater" rigs. Good idea or bad? Opinions please.
Start it up once a week. Drive it around the block. Use some sort of sun shade in the windows to protect the interior. Also shade the tires from direct sun as the UV will deteriorate the rubber. Do not use a car cover as the movement caused by wind will cause the fabric to wear the paint. Car covers should only be used in a garage. Be sure to wash off the dirt that lands on the vehicle every few weeks.
Drive it longer than just around the block. It won't get up to temperature and you'll have condensation build up in your engine. Take it out for a good long ride every so often.
For just a month or 2, I wouldn't worry about much. If you don't plan on driving it at all. Change the oil, fill your fuel tank and park it. But if you think you'll use it occasionally during this time. Just park it and forget about it. You wont hurt a thing.
I'd first and foremost use Stabil fuel treatment so your fuel doesn't go sour. Guzzlin sour gas can screw up some serious stuff.
I agree totally. I buy Sta-bil in the large bottle and use it in everything, boat, cars, etc. Probably best to keep your tank full also to avoid condensation and/or rust on the inside.
Thanks, I already put some stabil in the tank, really not worried about the battery or anything else. Mainly the seals, gaskets on the engine afraid the mains will dry up.
I drive my '72 once a month to work, and don't do anything special to it. It fires right up every time. a few yrs ago, I stored a Honda for a friend that was going to Iraq. He was gone for over a yr, when he got home he turned the key and it fired up in 2 seconds. Stabil, battery tender, car was jacked up off the ground with jackstands, and lower tire pressures.
