I went in to the dealership for the second radiator replacement. It was leaking but very slowly.
I went to pick up my truck this afternoon and the service manager informed me that when he called the hotline Ford informed him that they were not going to cover the radiator under warranty.
His Explanation: The "tee" recall was completed back in Oct. and is recorded as being the fix for the leaking radiator problem. Therefore, the radiator and FoMoCo is not liable for it's replacement.
Here are your conditions to watch for:
If you are under the 3yr/36,000 bumper to bumper you have no worries. When your odometer reads somewhere in the low 30's inspect your radiator VERY closely and regularly so that if there is ANY leak you can claim a new one.
If you are under the 100,000 warranty for the motor, the engine itself is the only thing covered and the $700 radiator replacement will not be covered.
If you are in my situation and have the extended warranty, coverage up to 200,000, the radiator is not covered but your dealership may do some creative bookkeeping to get it covered. I may have to fork out a $100 deductible.
Luckily my dealership is going to figure out a way to make Ford pay for this second radiator.
How many miles do you have on your truck???? If you are under 36k the radiator should be covered regardless of the T install kit. Ford knows thats not a fix for these cheap mexican made radiators, it might help, but not good enough. Its a bandaid for a cut that requires stiches.
I am over the 36,000 mile warranty. I have 71,000+ miles. This is why the rad is not covered but not completely. The dealer said that the rad might be covered regardless of mileage except that venturi tee thing is supposed to fix the rad problem. Since I had that done as well Ford says no on coverage.
It's a combination of both issues, mileage and the venturi thing.
The reason I posted this issue is to warn all of you to make absolutely sure your rad is not leaking as you approach 36,000 miles. We are all probably granted one replacement.
Yes caprang, my dealer guys are really cool. The sales guys and the service people are very down to earth and operate in a small town mentality.
The diesel mechanic is also really cool. I went in to retrieve my garage door opener at lunchtime and they let me walk back in the service bays to get it. The engine looks really cool without all those radiators in front of it! Anyway, he humors me by letting me talk to him about truck stuff, asking him all kinds of questions about the 6.4 training and what he knows about the motor. He maintains that it's a very good motor, when he was schooled on it the motor really impressed him.
This is the second time I have had service done that takes most of the day and they don't hesitate to give me a loaner car both times. It's a crappy Focus but it gets me around.
Well Ruschejj you have a GREAT dealer, dont ever lose them............Trust me, you get more respect from the Techs and service dept. if you are a "regular" customer. A loaner car is a privelage. Ford actually states that most repairs will not pay for a loaner for the customer, so that is coming out of the dealers pocket. Ford needs to step up to the plate and take care of these radiators.......they need to find the actual problem (not just a cooling T) and have a recall
The radiator in a 6.0 has tanks top and bottom. The 6.4 radiator tanks are on either side. The radiator sits on two pins to locate it in place. One pin for either tank. Under a hard pull, the frame distorts, effectively separating one tank from the aluminum radiator. You want a fix? Cut off one of the pins, or elongate one of the holes on the radiator locator tabs. All the tee does is keep cold water from re-entering a hot radiator causing cracks, not preventing the tanks from separating.
see this drives me crazy, ford should replace the rad no questions asked, they know they are a real problem. Just own up to the fact that ur rad is garbage warr or no warr. I am still under full warranty i am on my fourth rad what are they gonna tell me when the warranty runs out.
vloney, as always thanks for the expert advice. Is this a practice being used by Ford or the dealers? I worry how my dealer (or ford) would react if I needed a new radiator and they saw that I cut or modified the way the radiator was supported.
Also, I havent looked at these pins. Are they a solid fit or is there a rubber bushing of some sort around the pins? How sturdy is the radiator assembly if this modifiaction is done?
