I have posted this everywhere with little to no response, i have a 1999 F250 4x4 it has 170000 miles, and i have replaced everything that has to do with steering (from ball joints to the gear box to the leaf springs (they are oem replacements) and when i am driving down the road it feels like i drift everywhere. I've had it aligned and check 4 times because i know it shouldnt feel like that. It almost feels like the back of my truck is on ice when im driving no matter the speed, its just really frustrating cause i cant find the problem, there is no play in the gear box and the steering is all tight and everything is new.
Can any offer any information on this? Has anyone else had a similar problem even after everything has been replaced?
What tires and rims do you have on the truck? Mine was doing something very similar to what you are discribing. I found that when I put the tries to the pressure that in recommened on the door tag it stopped. Hope this give you something to look at and I am sure that some will chime in also.
I have the stock rims on the truck and I am running firestone tires i believe they are
265's but im not 100% sure on that. as far as tire pressure i run what the tire manufacture suggest which is 80psi, i think my door panel says for recommends 235's but im not sure on that either. The tires are brand new as well. what is fords recommended tire pressure?
I have stock rims also with 295's BFG's. My truck recomends 60psi in front and 80psi in the rear. Since I don't haul something heavy every day I run 60psi front and back. My truck came with 235's also but I run the recommended tire pressure and it drives better than when I didn't. Your door tag should tell you the recommended tire pressure for front and back.
There are a lot of posts on here on that subject and I don't think any consesus has been reached. I know I haven't found the answer. There's a thread tittled "wandering" from back about 45days or so with a lot of posts on the subject. For sure if you solve the problem let us know. The tire pressure did come up a number of times but if memory serves me it was suggested both ways, lower it to the Ford recommended 65lbs or raise it to the pressure stated on the tire. I've tried mine both ways with no noticable difference. I still think mine is in the stering gear but I had it replaced a year ago and I'm hesitant to do it again. But, when i put one hand on the steering colume and one on the pitman arm and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth it feels there is just a little play in there. There is also a differential joint on the lower part of the steering colume just above the steering gear that i suspect. I'm on vacation in FL til march but when I get home I'm gonna figure something out because it's driving me nuts.
