Hey, I'm looking for a 1999-2002 PSD 4x4 with under 200K miles. Right now I have a 2wd 2001 F250 PSD. I found this one on autotrader (click on link below).
It's a crew Cab long bed, 4x4, almost 199K miles, no tailgate, 7.3 PSD, automatic, Lariat. Only one problem....almost $12ooo. The truck is pretty nice looking, no accidents, no slavage title, good mechanical & okay cosmetc condition. I already know that with the way the economy is and the mileage on the truck that it is way overpriced. The trade in value is around 9 grand, but I STRONGLY doubt that the dealer gave that kind of money for a trade in.
Get the price down well below 10K. Although 10K for a truck with 200K miles is absurb, IMO.
Techniques? There's all kinds. Best technique is for YOU not to fall in love with the truck prior to buying. NO EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT PERIOD! Be prepared to walk if you don't like the deal because as soon as you make a bad deal, a better one will show itself the next day.
For what it's worth: I traded in my 2002 PSD last week on a new 2008. My 02 was a Lariat, fully optioned, 48,000 miles, spotless, supercab, long bed, leveling kit, wheels, All Terrain T/A's, they gave me almost $16,000 for it and have it advertised at $21K. They'll pobably get $19K for it one way or another. I did not want to sell the truck but I couldn't pass on the $10,500 off sticker for a new one. The new truck stickered at almost $52,000 and I gave them $25,000 difference. I think I made a pretty good deal, however, I know that good, low mileage 7.3's are rare around here and in high demand.
I'm a big ford fan, but for a 4wd diesel, the GMC/Chevy 6.5 TD's don't look to bad. You can find most of them for 7 grand in great condition and around 75K-150K miles. I know they don't have much power and the injectors need to be replaced pretty much every 100k miles, but the injectors are cheap and so is the cost of the trucks overall. Going for a 4wd diesel maybe the first time I lean away from Ford.

but its a chevy. im considering a diesel for my first time here soon when i buy a SD. im gonna get the 5.4 or a 7.3 PSD. I couldnt even think of owning a chevy.
Bad news. That truck sold..............Can't decide to wait for a 200k mile F2/350 to pop up again for the right price or to get an inexpensive 6.5 TD with around 75k - 125k miles....
Going from a 7.3l SD to a GM 6.5l is a big step down IMO. $12k for a fairly old truck with 200k miles on it is way too much $$$ IMO. Don't jump on the first trucks you see, look around and take your time. Its a buyers market out there.
Patience grasshopper... If you have cash and don't have a time table, your best bet is to look around and wait for that great deal. This is definitely a buyer's market!

That is some solid advise... it also applies to girlfriends!
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Actually, I've been looking around for about 7 months and I need a 4x4 soon. So trust me, I follow the "dont jump on it" rule very closely. And as for getting a 6.5 TD, I'm not really stepping down from a PSD. I would drive the 6.5 as my winter vehicle because of the 4x4. I will never get rid of my PSD. Only thing about PSD's I don't like is the cost of the injectors...........
theres a reason Ford trucks hold their value better then similar year/equipped Chevy's..
keep looking ur NEW truck is out there..
i looked for several months myself, till the right one came along.. so glad i waited.. cuz earyl on i tested/looked at a pile of roachs...started losing hopes.. but just when things seems like i'd not find what i was after my current truck popped up..
Why in the world would anyone get a diesel as their winter time vehicle?? I won't dis' you for thinking 6.5TD they can be made fairly strong but they suck in the winter.
I'm re-thinkin my decision about a chevy.........can't believe I was considering it. Anyway, I know a diesel isn't the best choice for cold weather, but I like diesel. If I do get somethin, I think im gonna go maderate old-school and get a 94.5-97 7.3 PSD. I like the looks and the engines are great. What do you guys think about the ones below. Im gonna keep running my finds through you guys since I'm young and you guys know a lot more.
I got other pics from the dealer and the interior isn't the cleanest and there are some dings and rust. You think the price is too much? (I'm thinkin it is.)
On the '97 a lot depends on the mileage and overall condition. You probably can get a better deal if you can find someone selling a truck privately.
When I bought my truck a few years back I made arrangements to have financing or cash available when I went to deal with a dealer. I ultimately bought the truck for an "out the door." price. I told the dealer I didn't care how he wrote the deal up, but when the check was written it would be for X amount and that included sales tax, dealer charges and whatever and that was all there would be. No additional charges to "prepare paperwork" "transfer fees" etc. If he wanted to do that, fine, but then I would charge a like amount to write my check to him. Ultimately, the question, then was about how much the check would be to buy the truck.
