98 explorer tranny question? help please
ok soo my one buddy's explorer has been running pretty well lately then he was backin out of his driveway and he heard like a pop/thump type noise and he defintly lost reverse and 1st gear is messed up anybody have any clue on what this could be?? besides the normal your tranny is bad answer...

In all probability, the band that engages those things has snapped. I don't know if they share the same band, but I suspect they do. The torque converter may have also gone. I don't know what you expect us to tell you, other than you need to have it looked at by a qualified professional.
