Off Topic Question...help
ok guys basically a quick question about my dads friends 98 explorer 4x4....so he called my dad last night and said he put his explorer in reverse it backed up a couple feet and he like heard a loud pop/thump noise and he lost reverse and he also dont have first gear anybody have a clue at all what it could be???

Sounds like tranny problems, but there is an Exploder forum -> CLICK ME
You may also want to PM a Mod and ask them to move this thread over there, and to rename it. The group here is AWESOME with PSDs and the 4R100... I'm sure the Exploder group will have some experts as well. Good luck!

im not sure but reverse and 1st might be driven by the same clutch pack. thats what it sounds like.
have a trannie shop check it with a computer, or any shop with a good code reader, snap on, actron, or otc for example.

it may make the od light blink, but it may not. i doubt youll see a code on the dash. a good reader will check the trannie pressures and call for certain things to check the trannie's opperation.
tell him not to drive the exploder unless he has to. if he keeps driving it and something did blow up he risks a new fill hole somewhere that will warrant complete replacement.

hes not getting any code lights blinking any i just got off the phone with him and he said it runs perfectly fine in drive but one thing he did notice if he would try to manualy down shift it, the tranny would want to shift but the motor rpms would drop when he shifted it?? and i asked him if it made a popping noise when he was backing up and exact words are "yes like it jumped into neutral"

the popping, kinda sounds like a blown rear end. the rpms going down on a down shift is impossible at a steady speed with a properly working trannie. keeping the same speed.
all together it sounds like he needs to get it to a repair shop or looked at by someone that knows what they are dealing with.
