Clutch Fan Problems...

My new 08 F-350 Auto 6.4 has a clutch fan that is locking up all the time. When the amb air temp is -10F to 50F it locks up and sounds like a jet air plane tacking off from under the hood. The only way I have been able to get it to unlock and act normal is to shut the engine off for a few moment and restart, even then it is over 50% that it will lock up. Mileage is suffering. The local service writer said the dealer did not have a Diesel Tech at the moment, so I should take it to another dealer almost 200 Miles away. When I shared my thoughts of the clutch fans job not really being any differant on a gas VS Diesel, she set me up with a appointment for 20 days later.

Now I have a few more items to add to the complaint list,
1.) Radio will turn it self off while driving down the road with out any input from the driver or passanger. You can turn it right back on and it is fine for a while. Some times it will hapen in 5 minutes and then it wont happen again for the rest of the day.
2.) Information Center will go to full bright and back to the dimmer setting while driving at night. No reason I can come up with for this. Some times it will happen every few miles, but then it would be fine for a few days.

No they do not happen at the same time...

I will see what the dealer has to say next week. I will write back then.

My fan clutch does it too at start up when it is cold sometimes. Not that it is ever really that cold here in Cali. I think it is part of the cold weather strategy. Sounds stupid but maybe it is trying to put more of a load on the engine to warm it up faster.

As for the flickering message center, do you have the latest flash? That is supposed to remedy that issue.

I have a 97 F150 shop truck that if you punch it from a stop light, the radio will shut off or change the station. We have never had it looked at... you probably need a new (refurbished) radio.

Well The Clutch fan has been changed, and is going to be changed again with a new P/N.
The dealer said that there is a NEW Upgraded P/N for this on the 6.4. Still no luck on the radio.

Can you explain about this new upgraded p/n for the fan? Is there a issue with those of us that have existing trucks? Or did they make a design change for future repairs/new inventory?

The New P/N is for the 6.4 trucks. I never had or heard of any problems with the clutch fan on the 6.0 or 7.3 PSD.
The Fan on the 6.4 is controlled by the engine control unit. So it is subject to faulty temp signels, thermostats and the usual wiring failures.
The dealer at first said that this was normal for trucks with the plow and or tow packages. Well mine does not have the plow package but does have the tow package, that's why I got the F-350. So I asked him why it had no problems all last summer in the Warm weather, but is not working right now in the COOL weather and why it worked fine for about 2000 miles just like the first one. I also asked to take a new truck off the lot and see if it sounds like a freight train trying to crawl out from under the hood when the engine is cold and the ambient air temp is 35F.

The new part will be installed next Monday.
