Question 08 Console question

Question about my father's '08 Escape. It's the 2.3l 5spd, XLS. He loves this little fuel saver, but...

The center console has a vertical notch on the passenger side, about parallel with the shifter. Something, somewhere is supposed to slide right into that notch, yet the Ford accessory catalog, nor the internet, has anything that would go in there. I don't recall seeing anything at the dealership in any of the other Escapes on the lot mounted there, and he's been bugging me to find out what belongs there (not that he actually wants to buy anything, he's just dying to know).

So, does anybody know what they put that spot there for? I'm assuming it's just something they never ended up selling, or maybe something they only offered for the Mariner or Tribute or something? Any answers?

The wife's 08 Limited has that notch. Whatever is supposed to go there apparently doesn't come with the Limited package. I have no idea what purpose it might serve.

that's what's driving me nuts. I can only assume it's a mount bracket for SOMETHING, but, WHAT?

I don't drive the thing, but if I did, it'd be a nice place for a slide in bracket for mounting a Sirius/XM tuner, GPS, MP3 player, or in my case, Slacker tuner.... Especially considering the fact that the clearances on the dash stack apparently prohibit the use of a VSM from Pro-fit or others, just not enough gap for it. That would be a handy spot, as long as you didn't have to look at whatever gizmo you had there constantly...

If nobody else does anything with that spot, I'm now thinking about making something to go there, and marketing the fool thing. There's a ton of 'em on the road, and, heck, somebody else has got to be as bothered by that useless dash-hole as I am.

EDIT: But I'd rather somebody just gave me a link to something I can sucker my father into buying. I'm lazy, and have an odd sense of humor, it would amuse me....

The top tray in the armrest storage is removable. Take it out and it will have the mate to the mystery slot. On my '09 XLS, it can also go on the center armrest rear for access by back seaters.

Awesome! I'll have to try that the next time I'm in the thing!

Yep, looked at the 08 earlier, that tray from the console is what fits in the slot. Takes up some knee/leg room in the passenger side when used there though.

I find this very funny since many states are outlawing cellphone usage while driving! Using a laptop instead will be allowed?

In the City Of Chicago, it is banned, but a lot of people have laptops mounted on "something" to hold them still while driving, as I see this everyday(truck driver-local), so I thought this "slot" might be something related to that..Sorry.............
