i have very low heat in my 1990 Ford F150 5.0 litre truck. I checked the engine coolant it was 50/50, fan motor and controls, the heater core all seemed to be fine. I blocked off the front of my radiator half way. nothing is working and i still have no heat. What can i do its freezing here?
Any help is appreciated i am new here and am not sure if i am in the right forums. thanks everyone for ur patience
is the fan working? if so most of the time you'll get no heat or intermittent heat when the coolant is low... make sure it's topped up and the overflow reads at it's proper level...
Check to see if your thermostat is stuck open?, thats the first placed I would look. After that check to see if the heater core is plugged up.......Lots of info here just do a search, and welcome to FTE!

yes i checked the coolant level it is good and the overflow is always at proper level. i was thinking it may be my thermostat that is stuck .what is the difference between a 180 and a 195 thermostat regarding of giving off heat. thanks for your reply

thanks for your reply...do you know a way of checking a thermostat without taking it out?
If you have a heat gun check temp going in and out of heater lines.NO heat gun then hold the heater hoses one in each hand check to see if they are hot going in and out.If you suspect lower temp on one of the lines then check the heater control valve or the door flapper inside the heat core area.A good heat gun is your friend.
If your thermostat is stuck open, you wont have much temp. on the gauge and even after running up to operating temp the upper radiator hose will only be warm to the touch.
I would guess stuck thermostat, stuck blend door or possibly a partially plugged heater core. Properly operating, the two hoses to the heater core are too hot to hold for a long time, and the temp is nearly the same in both hoses. Any of these could be the culprit. You need the 195 deg thermostat for the engine to run properly. The computer will make it run rich until it gets up to temp, and the temp the computer is looking for is achieved with the 195 thermostat.
Just to be sure, I always drop a new thermostat in a pan of water on the stove and use a candy thermometer to see what temp causes it to open. The blend door can be partialy open as a result of sometime falling down thru the defrost vents. You might have a pen, crayon, kids toy, etc blocking the door from closing completely. Found a 3 inch deck screw in mine. 15 minute job to pull the cover off the heater core, and check the door for proper operation. When the heater core cover is off, the blend door is easily visible in the lower left corner. A small gap in the door can overcome the heat from the heater core.
Good luck Frank
Its probably the thermostat. Go get a new one anyways. Its $15 at most. And as far as my 460 goes, its right on top of the engine. Two little bolts, easy to access.
