F150 muffler

Just a quick question. What muffler would I get to get a louder better sound out of my F150? Are flowmasters pretty loud? Is there any difference in gas mileage with different mufflers? I don't know much about this.

For single exhaust, I don't think you will find the sound you are looking for.
If you go duals, you can get a loud, rappy sound from a pair of glasspacks, or a more mellow, sweet performance sound from a cannister muffler like a flowmaster.
I like glasspacks on my work trucks 'cause they last a loooong time.

Try a Vortex. It is made by cherry bomb. It sounds like a flowmaster, but flows like a glasspack. Mine sounds sweeeeeet!!!

I would for sure go with the glass packs. Braappp....brraapp Get the shortest ones possible for the diameter pipe you want to run. Don't go over 2.5" because you don't want the xhaust velocity to slow down. Thrush glasspacks are fairly inexpensive... I'm gonna try out a set from summitracing.com... Set me back 50 bucks prolly. Hope this helps...

Thanks, right now i'm looking around, don't NEED a new muffler, so thats not the first thing on my list now. Just got my truck and I am loving it. What do you think of the Flowmaster 40 series mufflers? And does your muffler choice effect fuel economy or performance? If so are the glass packs better or worse than the flowmaster in that respect?

For performance I'd go with the Flowmaster 40 series muffler (NOT the Delta if you want sound) You will get more HP and better fuel economy with that muffler...uh, the glasspacks are mainly for sound. I'm sure you'll get some gain with them over the factory exhaust set-up but Flowmaster will be better. By the way...what are the specs on your F-150?????? I could send you a sound clip of my 351 with a gutted cat if you'd like.

'99 F150 4.2L everything is still stock. I was pretty much thinking either the glasspacks or a Flowmaster 40 series single inlet dual outlets.

Mmm....
I would highly recommend going with the flowmaster 40s...
For the size of the engine you have it will definitely deepen the tone up while the glasspacks will more or less just make it a louder unrefined sound. And the flowmaster's will also give you more performance gains of the two on the engine you have. There have been quite a few posts on the 4.2L and exhaust different people have used... look around. I'm sure you'll find all you need.
