I have a 300 I6 in my truck with climatic/auto choke. There is a threaded hole right under the black choke cap that is sucking vaccum really bad, when i rebuilt the carb it was sealed on the inside with duck tape. What i was wondering is what is suppose to go in that hole? I am ordering a new carb and want to know what what goes there and where i can find one so i can get my choke and truck working right. Thanks for the help.
I went out to the shop and pulled out a Carter carb that you most likely have on your truck. I looked it over really well, and the only things I can see are (1) the brass flare fitting to which the choke heat tube connects and (2) an opening that points downwards, about half an inch in diameter. I can't tell if it's threaded or not because it's capped off on this one. Does either one of these sound like what you are seeing?
Yeah, the opening pointing downwards is the one im talking about. Mine isn't capped off. Thanks for the help fmc400. Also I have been having trouble finding a replacement carb, every one I order, wont fit down over the studs on my intake manifold the holes are to wide apart and they dont look the same. Did they change carbs or manifolds over the years in these trucks, mines a 79 but every carb i order for a 79 shows up and wont fit.
Can you find any sort of markings on the carb, such as a manufacturer? You might have an Autolite carburetor. This is a 1 barrel correct? Can you post a picture of your intake and carburetor? The carburetors that keep showing up when you order are most likely a Carter YFA but someone might have changed out your manifold in the past.
It is a carter, but it says yf not yfa. The little carb tag is gone, and right now I can't really get any pictures because the truck is sitting in a parking lot waiting for a new carb. Is there a difference between carter yf and yfa also do they have different carbs for automatics and manuals?
That's really interesting. I'm not aware of any differences in carburetor application based on transmission. The only thing I can think of is it might have to do with a 49-state vs. California emissions setup. You might ask the parts house to look up your truck again and see if there is an option for that.
Ok I do remember there being California emissions listed by some, but my truck was built in New Jersey so.... I think it might have a manifold and carb off a 77 or older truck because I found a remain site online that shows pictures and the carb on my truck is the one pictured by 75-77 ford trucks. And the carbs I keep getting in the mail are the ones pictured by 78-79 ford trucks. Problem solved....... I'll let you know.
Well alittle update. I got the carb in for the 77 f150 and it again doesnt fit, so I went to the parts store and we looked at every year and model 73-79 ford truck with a 300I6 and I think we might have found the issue. I think that I have an intake manifold and carb off an F250. Do any of you know if there is a difference between the manifold on a f250 and a regular f150? I also got some pictures and will be putting them in my gallery. So has anybody experianced this before? Do f150 and f250 with the bigsix have different intake manifolds?
Well I got it all figured out. I ordered a 76 f-250 carb and it bolted right up. Truck is running amazing now. I wasn't able to make out any of the part numbers on the manifold its to dirty and nasty, but tonight I am going to get the steam jenny and degreaser out and see if I can get it clean under there. Can you tell me anything knowing that a 76 f-250 carb worked on the manifold? thanks
