Well I haven't been on much this weekend, so I will start this thread now. On Saturday, I completed the tank mods on my truck. I got the $35 Diesel Innovations kit. I won't go into long boring details about it, but I struggled with it. I started Friday afternoon at 3:45, worked til about 6:00 p.m. then went home and worked on it from 11:00 a.m to about 4:00 Saturday afternoon. This is the first vehicle that I have had that I have really worked on. This was my first time ever really doing something like this, so I was working on a learning curve I suppose. A couple of things that I had trouble with were the fill and vent hose connections. Those things must be glued on or something. I had to be taught to use a fuel line removal tool, which after learning should have been easy to figure out, oh well that's what this is all about really. I didn't get the metal tube for the pickup assembly cut right the first time, and had to take the assembly apart 2 times to get it to the right lenght. I didn't want to cut too much off though.
Two things that I did not struggle with were getting the ring back on the tank which I put in front of a large heater that we have in the shop and it went back on right the first time. Also the Harpoon mod was easy as could be. I used a ratcheting pvc pipe cutter that I read that Guzzle used.
I used a combination of 3 instructions for installing this kit, DI's, Guzzle's, and ITP's. DI included 3 pieces of fuel hose with the kit, and you use the hard line already on the truck. I cut the line off as said in the instructions but there was still a fitting left on the hard line and I could not see any way that the new fuel line would go over it. So I thought that I had run into another problem when I happen to think about how ITP has their kit set up. Since we had a spool of 3/8 fuel line here at the shop, I decided just to run a line from the tank to the pump, putting the filter in between, like ITP does. This line was a little big for the filter and fuel pump fittings, but I double clamped everything so I hope it will be alright.
Even after all of the struggles I had, this was still worth it. I couldn't tell any difference at first, because my truck had been sitting overnight. After I drove it a ways down the road and let off the throttle and it kicked into idle, I was like WOW. The difference was amazing. The harpoon is awesome as well, and I couldn't even get another gallon in after the pump kicked off.
Just some tips from me, take this as you will lol. Read all of Guzzle's, ITP's, and DI's instructions no matter which kit you go with. There are things in each one's instructions that are not in the others. Secondly, have some help to put the tank back into place. I did and it made it a heck of a lot easier. I was worn out when it came time to do this and there was no way I could have done it alone.
Congrats on the install. One of the benefits hanging around here is you gain the confidence to do these things yourself. Feels good to know you did this and it actually made things better, doesn't it?

Yes it does. Any knowledge that I have about my truck is mostly from this site. I wasn't intimidated by this job at all, it just turned out to be more work than I had anitcipated, which is alright I don't mind the work. But when the directions say that it should take you 2-3 hours taking your time to do, it kind of makes you feel like your doing something wrong when it takes you much longer than that. But i'm no professional mechanic and don't claim to be.
Great info there Jeff thats good to know. Glad you got it done and it was successful. I think by your list of mods your getting pretty good at it, we did good on those swaybar bushings. Reps to you for a good write up now go out and enjoy the snow heh.

Yeah after we figured out what was going on with those bushings, that job wasn't too bad. If I ever have to do mine, i'll know what to do.
Congrats on the install. I remember the first time I filled up as well. I couldnt believe how much more diesel I got in the tank without the pump stopping.
Jeff- Way to go on getting it completed. This is a tuff first mod probably for most of us. The next one will hopefully be easier & the more you do the better you get! Good Luck
Jeff, do you know if that DI kit is the same as the kit ITP sells without the pre pump filter?
No not exactly. The ITP kit installs a new line on the return line, and Guzzle did this on his setup as well. I guess that this is for any air that is in the return line gets dropped further away from the pickup. I'm not 100% on that, but that's the only reason that I see for it. The DI kit does not include that part, but other than that, the kits look virtually the same to me if you got the ITP w/o the filter.

Well this wasn't my first mod, but it was my first time messing with any type of fuel system modification. This was certainly the toughest mod I have done yet, most time consuming, and most frustrating. My gauge install was time consuming, but it didn't frustrate me like this one did.
I think that the DI kit is worth it for the money, and if I were going to do it again I would disregard the fuel hose that comes with the kit from the beginning and buy some fuel hose (if you don't have a source for it like I did) like 10 ft. or so and route it like ITP's kit does. Also get a couple more hose clamps because the kit only comes with 6 and I used 8 the way I installed it.
Congrats on the install. I am sure it feels good to have completed them. I HAVE to do these two mods and I just keep putting them off. Now my excuse is, I don't want to run the fuel tank down while it is this cold out, but I need to do these mods.
PS- do you have a link to the D.I. kit that you used? $35 and some extra clamps and fuel line sounds like a cheap and effective mod to me.
