My 05 F350 Crew/6.0/automatic is stored for winter and since it`s plus 4 today I thought I`d start it up, all it would do was produce a hum on the right side near the heater plenum. The starter would not engage or even try to turn the motor over, the only sound made was like an electric fuel pump running. I let it run that way for 3-4 minutes till it quit but still no action from the starter.
What problem do I have?
Everything that I can think of including the batteries is to snuff, the glow plug light comes on and goes out, none of the lights ever dim at all, not even when I turn the key to the start position. I`ve put a charger on monthly as the batteries will go down.
While my hunch is that the batteries are fine, they were charged last week, I`ll load test them and eliminate the simple stuff first.
The under hood noise is what`s got me concerned, I don`t recall hearing anything there that loud before.
What steps does this truck`s starting system go thru when the key is turned on other than the glow plug operation?
What type of sounds from the vacuum pump, injectors and fuel pump?
From the sounds I hear it`s like it`s trying to pump up fuel and I`m almost thinking there`s air in the fuel system somewhere, like when changing a fuel filter and not getting quite all of the air bled out.
If there`s air in the fuel system or a lack of fuel pressure would a sensor prevent the starter from trying to turn the engine over?
Seems like there is lots of battery power but I will check it all out.
All else fails I`ll end up calling the stealership, getting put on hold......
This is really starting to get to me Sherm.
Pun intended.
I`ve tried moving the selector from park to neutral and back afew times with the key in start position, no change.
The under the hood noise continues everytime the key is tured on.
Since no one has just come on out and said it (it was mentioned by brickie but not put in context) I will. The humming noise under your hood when the key is turned on is the vacuum pump. It has nothing to do with your truck not starting.
As to your truck not turning over with the key it is possible that the starter relay is not engaging or the ignition switch went south. But I seriously doubt that they aren't working if it was fine when you parked it.
May I suggest that you check the fuses related to the starting circuit and see if you don't have one that is blown.
But at the end of the day I would go with the opinion that it's your batteries as has been mentioned already. They tend to lose a charge quickly in cold weather and if you charged them last week they could potentially be low by now.
If you are so inclined you can jump the starter relay terminals to see if the starter will spin. That will help you figure out if the starter is O.K. or not.
A little trick when the starter is going out. Tap the side of the starter with a rubber mallet. If it is a starter problem sometimes it is just enough to get her started. It worked on my van when the starter went out. I then drove it straight to the mechanic and changed the starter.
