The wife used the truck the other day and it quit on her. Some mechanic guy looked at it and told her the fuel pump was out.
When I got back, I have found this much information:
1. Cranks but wont start
2. Wait to start light not comming on
3. when cranking, no oil pressure registering
4. no sign of fuel. ie-no smoke, no smell, no fuel added to filter housing.
Here is what Ive checked:
1. ALL the fueses including #30 (fuel heater)
2. Switched PCM Relay and PCM flash diode with my 01
3. plenty of fresh oil
4. plenty of fuel in tank
5. Battery cables slightly corroded
6. no sign of fuel pump running
Other info:
1. CPS has been replaced
2. Has Superchip set on Tow Perf.
3. Has Airraid cold air intake and filter
4. was pulling a 5 horse trailer uphill when it quit.
So what is your opinion, put a fuel pump on it? Is it something else? Any advice would be very helpfull, Thanks.
When the wait to start light does not come on, in my past experience as a mechanic I have found that in the fuel filter housing in the bottom there is an element that can go bad. I can not remember what they call it off the top of my head, but when you look down inside it is an exposed wire that is soldered to spade connectors that you can not see. Anyway when that goes the wait to start light will not come on. Hope this helps. Also I dont think it throws any DTC's.
Ron, I totally agree. Battery cables do need to be cleaned.
Tommy, I belive your talking about the fuel heater element. I have read that they go bad, blow the fuses, and cause the "wait to start" light to go out. However in this case the fuse is good. I wont rule the fuel heater out, but if it shorted out the fuse should have blown
just for the hell of it check the shut off switch down by the pasangers feet..its behind the kick panel...is the pump getting power???(should have asked that first)
the line from the tank has a clip on it that needs to be spread apart then pushed up..like in the pic bellow...the front line uses a tool used for the AC lines...
Thanks Ron. What about air, anytime you open a system, it will get air. Is there a vent anywhere? I know there is a water drain on the fuel filter housing, will that vent any air in the fuel system? I had an old Perkins In a welder, that if you got air in the fuel system, it was a pain in the A** to get purged. Powerstrokes that sensitive?
cycle key 3 or 4 times making sure the pump starts and stops after 20 or seconds..then fire her up..the fuel from the bowl to the heads will still be in there,,.it will take a few miles to work the air out of the line and for her to smooth out..
Went to town to get a new fuel pump. Stoped in and taked to a friend at a repair shop. He advised me that te fuel pump was probly ok, and because the fuses where good, the pcm computer was suspect. So armed with a borrowed used computer, I headed for my truck.
The first thing I did was cleaned the battery cables. Next I tried to remove the "chip" from my computer. (this was also sugested) When that failed, I disconnected the batterys and swaped computers. As I finished reinstalling the computer, I noticed a wire that I had run to the trailer, was melted to the exhaust manifold. I finnished installing the CPU and unhooked the wire. No go!
Broke out a test light and poked around the GPR and (need help here) the selinoid/relay next to it, I found that the booted pole had power, and that was it. (key on) If I crossed the power on pole with the small pole next to it, THE FUEL PUMP CAME ON! So not knowing any more, I ran to the Ford dealer, and purchased a new one. Stuck it on and.......Nothing! Same as before.
So here is my question- First what the hell is the name of the selinoid/relay that I changed, and what else did I mess up when the trailer wire shorted out?
Damn. I missed this. That is the AIH relay. Air Intake Relay. You don't need it. You need to completely disconnect the cables to that thing. I bet one has melted through somewhere. Check it out closely. My AIH cables are in my shed where they have been for a few years now.

Check your fusable links. I'm not sure of the location, but I would hazard a guess at somewhere around one of the hood hinges.
