Question turbo destroyed

well, I just did my 6637 mod and while the intake tube was off i decided to take a look-see at my compressor wheel of my turbo...didnt look so good. the wheel is pretty much torn to an oblivion. the edges are broken and uneven. didnt check to see if there was any play in the wheel, but my question is... i plan on getting the wicked wheel but cant afford to have it installed and dont think i know enough to do it myself. would i be an idoit if i just ran the truck till the turbo craps out or would that just do alot more damage than i can handle? this truck is my daily driver and only tow a 18 foot boat whenever my boss/wife lets me. 99 f-250 SD 7.3L PSD, edge evolution on med. setting, 6637, foil delete, everything else stock. thank you in advance and HAPPY STROKIN'!!!!!

There are some very detailed instruction threads on here on how to change your turbo wheel, someone will get on soon to point you in the right direction. You can do it!

I would rebuild it, and go ahead and install the WW. If you think it's beyond your capabilities, then you've already admitted defeat. There are many members that have successfully done a turbo rebuild or WW install. You can do it, too. I wouldn't wait too long and have any more fragments of the compressor wheel, or other wearing pieces, that may pass thru the IC and into the engine. It would be best to do something soon. You are looking at less than $200 for the rebuild kit and a WW. It'll be more costly as more parts may be needed later. As long there is almost no in and out slack in the shaft (thrust surface of backing plate is still good) you can rebuild it now for a minimal cost. You may just need the wheel.
Let me know if I can help in some way.

Welcome to FTE.. I am glad that someone else from La. has joined. Seems like Me and Millerfeed was the only ones in the 7.3 forum. If You have a little mech. ability then You can do it. Read up on it and take the plunge. If You can print out the directions and have them out there with You. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

You're welcome.
You have journal bearings (bushings), not ball bearings.
In/out slack means the thrust collar and, most likely, the backing plate behind the compressor wheel are worn out. I just rebuilt a stock turbo, on a 2000 PSD, that I had to replace the plate, compressor wheel, along with the kit. His was alot worse shape than yours, judging from your description. I think yours will be salvagable.
EDIT: His mileage was about the same as yours, so you could possibly need the plate, too.

There you go. The rebuild isn't too too hard I don't think. I wouldn't keep running it. Those fragments are very bad for the engine, don't wait too long.

Might be up for that.
We'll have to see what he says about the condition of the turbo shaft.

I would absolutely take Rick (Miller_Feed) up on the offer if it is possible. You could absolutely learn alot from the folks that would show up to help & hang out. But then again, you might wind up installing performance injectors along with it!

But you will be happier........

Bring Beer.....Always the appropriate gift

Thanks Rich, wouldn't take long to get it changed it out. I sure learned a lot from Roland. The main thing I learned, is not to try do something half azz.

Hey Roland, yes, we will see what he has to say.

That broken wheel needs to come off ASAP. Besides being unbalanced, it sounds like it has the potential to come apart....

Wish he could post up some pictures so we could survey the damage. He's too new to do this yet.

Good point about the wheel. I don't want him to make matters worse by running it if it's that bad.

I do have what it takes to get it down here, if he can't drive it here.
