i heard something about someone making their own tie rods out of like 1" tubing or something and bolting them on. does anyone do this? or has anyone tried it?
just wondering cuz im sure it would save a lot of money and i would think be pretty strong also. if there is any positive feed back i will be trying this on the truck in my sig.
thanks
If you can weld properly, then I'd say it is ok to use on road.
You get DOM tubing, 1.5 or 1.75" x 0.25" wall and get weld-in prethreaded bungs that match the TPI and pitch of your TRE's that you are using and then cut the tube to length, weld in the bungs, thread the TRE's in, and go.
No, this isn't that much cheaper than a stock tierod. If any at all. DOM is expensive, TRE's are $40 a piece, bungs are $3 to 5... You're looking at over $100, but shouldn't be over $150.
Yes use DOM
Yes use .25 wall
Yes be able to weld properly, not just join two pieces of metal together and call it good
I did it on my truck, and put a writeup in the tech folder if you want to read more about a specific install. The thing is, for a street truck, you won't save any money. By the time you buy all the parts, get a reamer and do all the work, you could have just bought some replacement parts and have been done with it.
