Guys, I have an 05 X with a V10 with around 40k on the clock. The last couple of days in around 30 degrees, it's hesitated a little when starting and tonight, it took 2-3 seconds to start. I drove to the gas station to fill up which was around 5 mins driving. It took me around 10 mins to fill up and when I went to crank it up, nothing. Wouldn't even turn over. Got a boost from a guy and went to the store around 10 mins from there and while I was in the store, I left the truck running (5 mins or so)
Drove another 5 mins to a place to eat and it sat outside for around 30 mins while I ate.
When I went to crank it, it cranked fine. Dunno, I'm thinking the battery and I'm gonna have it checked out but here are my questions.
1. I have the premium extended warranty from Ford. Is the battery covered under the warranty?
2. Is it true that after the 36k miles factory warranty, the extended warranty takes over but it's a 100 dollar deductible every time which is what I was told but NOT when I signed up.
3. What brand/quality is the original battery and what are the specs on it?
4. Friend of mine told me to take it back to Ford and they would pro rate the old battery towards a new one. Is this true?
5. Do I want another OEM battery or should I get another one?
6. If so, what's good to get, how much, where do they sell them and what specs should I get? We have Advanced Auto, Napa, O Reillys or something, Auto Zone and Interstate Batteries around here.
7. Can you do the (add) second battery mod on a non diesel or is there no room? Should I have to?
I"m going to the dealership monday so quick replies would be appreciated.
In the past I have had good luck with Motorcaft Batteries,,,I just had to replace one on my 06' F350 about 2 months ago now,,checked the batteries had 1 dead cell,,load tested bad also,,so if you have an 05,,it could be time for a new battery as well !
I would check when you go to the dealer, about the warranty,,you may atleast get some $$ off the new one,,and I would also put the most CCA(cold cranking amp) battery that they offer, and will fit,,you may also want to have the alternator checked.
You should not need a second battery unless,,,you have added other electrical draw items.
Sounds more like A dirty terminal, loose connection or bad solenoid, next time it does it, turn the headlights on & see if they dim while cranking it, if they stay bright or are bright & then go out completely it`s probably one of the above, if they start out a little dim & then dim down alot when cranking it`s probably the battery or some charging issue.
Alright, I took it to a buddy of mine and we cranked it up and he measured it while it was running and it started with 14.7 volts and dropped very fast. With the engine off it was around 12.5 and dropping and when we cranked it, it was 7.3 volts. He said it was the battery..
Sounds like the battery. The 14.7 means the charging system is working. Then a cell or 3 has shorted and it will not hold the charge long. I went through the same thing, with several optimas. If I drove 20 minutes or more it would fire back up within 24 hours. If just drove the 2 miles to work, it would be flat dead in 4 hours.
The more I've read, the Lead Acid style is on top. 1000CCA is the highest I've seen. I still prefer AGM batteries and would rather have the reserve capacity rather than super CCA. When my last optima died, I had a Exide orbital on hand so that's what I used. I didn't do much comparison shopping so I can't say what the best is or how they compare to motorcraft.
