2001/ 120K miles

Hello,

I've been looking for an 01/02 Excursion with the 7.3 PSD. Trying to find one with under 100K but no luck so far. I've been seeing alot with 110/120K and was wondering how those of you in this range are getting along with your trucks. Anything in particular I sholud watch for? I have yet to find one close enough to test drive. Thanks for the help.

Mitch

I would steer away from 02's unless it was one of the trucks that didn't come with a mechanical diode in the tranny or that diode has already been replaced.

I wouldn't worry about a 7.3L with 120K on it at all. 7.3L had some minor issues (cam position sensor, turbo pedestal O-rings that leak but nothing major. There are SO many hop-up/aftermarket parts & support for them I would look for the one that simply fits your budget and all the other stuff is in good condition (ball joints, brakes, tires etc. etc.)

Thanks Monsta,

I have been talking to the owner of an 01 with 117K that looks to be in good shape. New tires etc. They are asking $13,500. I think it would be in the $11/12,000 range to make a good deal. Am I in the ballpark on prices? I see several on EBAY at this price. It's about a 5 hour drive to look at it. I bought a camper last summer and my Suburban just won't do the job for pulling.I have looked at P/U's but want the extra room for the family.

Regards,

Mitch

I thought it was the 01's that had the bad diode. I have 95K on mine and runs great.

Thats correct. The 01's had the bad diode. My X has 98k and my F350 has 180k w/o any tranny issues.

Whoops...reversed that.

Mitch, steer away from the 01's unless the mechanical diode has been replaced.

How big of a job and how expensive is it to replace the mechanical diode?

If you have to ask...

From what I understand it requires removal of the transmission. (For me, I stop right there.) A lot of parts need to be changed inside. It is basically a complete rebuild.

That's why you should try and avoid the 01's if possible. However, that diode was only used in the FIRST half of the model year.

Time to brush up on your "reading & decoding the VIN" skills.
