Axel relocation

I am still working on the 1979 frame for my swap. There is a 3 inch difference with wheel base measurement. I have been looking and cannot see that there will be a negative impact on function by moving the axel forward 2-3 inches to correct the difference with the 66 wheel base. Am I missing anything. I understand I will have to measure pinion angle for any differences. I will likely move the braket forward and then up a couple inches for some additional drop. There is currently a brace that will also need to be moved for this change. I am working with a bare frame so if I want it done this is the time to get it done.

Thanks.

One last thing. An anti sway bar is for side to side movement, correct? And a traction bar is for axel movement, front to back(twist)? Am I missing anything?

I don't think there will be any function differences, but it may look off. If the wheel is set 3 inches further towards the front of the wheel well.

I'm going from a 129" wheel base to a 132" wheel base. If I don't correct it the wheels will set further back in the wheel well. The adjustment I described is to bring it back to its correct placement.

Are you going to just move the axle on the spring pack or move the entire spring assembly forward?

going to grind off all the rivets and move everything. I don't think moving just the axel on the spring back would be a good idea.

I think it's the U joints job to deal with any angle issues so in my head me thinks your good to go. Be sure it's square is all I can think of. What are your plans for re attaching it ? Bolted, riveted, welded ?

I have a bagfull of grade 8 bolts and lock washers I picked up yesterday. I was also toying with the idea of a little welding insurance. I will likely measure everything very good, tack it in place, then drill my new holes. Bolt here up and probably just leave the welds.

The key will be to insure the pinion angle to the horizontal is equal to the crankshaft/transmission angle to the horizontal. They are not on the same CL but their CLs must be parallel. If not, you will have a vibration in the drveline. It would appear that if you move the rear shackle mount up 2" on the frame, you must move the front spring mount up 2". If you move the rear only, you will effectiviely rotate the pinion angle down (i.e. decrease the pinion angle with the horizontal). Either way, check the angles when complete. The simple inexpensive angle finder gages work well for the check. Good luck!

the anti sway bar is used to to help prevent body roll. It doesn't prevent any side to side movement of the axle relative to the frame. On a 4wd, the track bar prevents the side to side movement of the axle. You are correct that traction bars prevent axle wrap.
