hey i had a question about synthetic oil..ok i have a 2000 7.3 with 84,000 and have been running rotella since i got it with 65,000 on it....my question is if i wanted to switch over to snythetic at my next oil change around 85,000 miles would i have to do anything besides just draining the 15w40 rotella and put the new rotella snythetic in?? would it still be fine to run the motorcraft oil filter or is there a better one out there?? i got an advancded auto, napa, and autozone autoparts store around me...soo hope to hear your answers...
I think alot of folks have made that type of change, me included. When I did it, I sucked the extra quart out of the HPOP as well. I thought this ws important because I was going from Dino to Syn. I don't think that is necessary for regular oil changes. Also, depending on your location, going to 5w-40 ROtella Syn will make for less rowdy starts in cold weather.
What Ray said. I will add that your choice of filters is a fine one. Motorcraft, Napa Gold(my choice), Mobil 1,and Wix are the golden standard around here and at other Ford specific sites. There are some others, but I would caution against Fram. They consistently score poorly when tested against those other brands.
well i live about half hour away from pittsburgh pa and today it was 7below when i woke up and started it, my other question is what is the absolute best oil filter?? is the motorcraft one fine?? like what do you guys run??
there are better filters if you can find them fleetguard LF3974 filter, it contains what is called "Stratapore" technology, which is supposed to provide higher filtration efficiency without sacrificing flow, and do this for longer run periods.
I change from dino to synthetic every winter, and back again in the summer. I dont drain the hpop and I use Napa filters. So far so good, although Im just gonna switch to synthetic all year around now. I can go a tad longer with a syn oil change, and it all equals out costwise in the end.
I did what you did -- switched from Rotella dino to syn Rotella. I bought the truck with 60k on it, and I put the syn in it at 68k or so. I drove it to FL, then did my first OC with dino Rotella. Didn't know about syn Rotella until I got on this site. Next OC and all subsequent have been Syn Rotella, except one because both WM around me were out of it. I put in Delo, and didn't like it too much (it was winter, and I had my first "ROMP" with it). However, my next OC will be Schaeffer 9000. Supposedly one of the best oils out there. But I have no complaints about the syn Rotella at all. It's been a great oil.
I run Motorcraft filters. Always have, probably always will. I even run a Motorcraft filter on my wife's Mitsubishi Raider DuroCross (Dodge Dakota). LMAO!!!
Im in State College, pa, (right in the middle of the state, if you didnt know) and I run 5w40 synthetic rotella, and the motorcraft filters from wally world. Last two oil change analysis' I had done, were at the 7500 mile range, and they told me I was below average on nearly everything, and to run the next change to 10000 miles. Not too shabby for a truck thats next oil change will be at 200000 miles. The truck still has the origional injectors and glow plugs for now (however that may be changing at the next oil change) and starts every time, even below zero, and I NEVER plug the truck in.
I use Motorcraft filters on both the PSD and the wifey's Exploder. Absolutely no problems with them. Plus, I just swtich both vehicles to Sythn oil. The truck runs smoother and starts without the "romps" in the cold. Probably will stick with the Sythn year-round on both.
