mine idled faster than it should when i got it but i idled it down alittle and sometimes i think mine winds tighter than it should but i dont know. and mine has had pump turned up and timing advanced mine smokes like a train if i get on it hard.
You will not win any speed records with a non turbo, but it will do the job.
The heaviest load I've pulled any distance with mine was a log skidder on an equipment trailer. About 15 miles up I-5 at about 35 mph. The truck had more in it, but I wasn't brave enough to try Figured the weight of it and the trailer was just under 40K lbs. Not recommending anyone to try that!!! I would have gone to jail, had I been caught. I wish they had camera phones back then.
As for normal pulling, 17K total up a 6% highway grade at 25 mph in 3rd gear (5 speed), is the slowest I've run.
yes they have good power and good low end torque but at this times these motors werent ment to be speed demons they were just work trucks. but with the right mods i dont see why these engines could make some decent numbers on the strip.
i may just be dreaming when i say this(lol) but i have plans for a future 6.9 race truck to run in the eighth mile strip, that will be a 6.9 with all the goodies 80 thou off pistons stage1 inj moose pump upgrade valve springs so maybe i can spin 4500 rpm maybe (lol) twin turbos and some were around 40 psi boost, head studs, intake, custom heders and studs a hypermax stud girtle(whatever that thing is) and maybe she will hold together. maybe and if it does you better watch out newer psd and duracraps and cummins i will suck your paint off when i go by you
The 6.9 and 7.3 NA's share the same cam. I am pretty certain that the turbo 7.3 uses the same camshaft as well. A stock or mildly built diesel engine does not react to a larger or different duration cam as a gas engine does. The factory grinds are capable of flowing as much air as the turbo will give it. Especially with the limited boost capabilities that the IDI will handle in stock form. It's only when you get to some of the extreme performance levels would a camshaft change be warranted.
The idle speed and governor speed difference with your truck is most likely due to pump timing, timing advance, or something internal on the injection pump itself.

I have seen several reports on different Cummins forums that put the new 6.7in the mid 15's in the 1/4, showroom stock. And after driving a new Duramax, it is even a bit faster than mine is. I've seen numbers on some of the pumped 5.9 trucks in the sub 11's. You have a lot of work to do to get there.
I am still waiting for the dyno numbers on Dave S' build. We should start a pool to get him to one of these dyno days and see what that IDI will really do.
i dont see why it aint possible to get at least 600 hp out of one of these engines. now how long it will last i dont know but i think it can be done, and i dont really expect to build one that will run in the 11s quarter mile, but it would be cool to get like 13s or something like that maybe faster. but what i plan on doing is bassically building one with the most power possible and still maybe be able to drive it on the street. and yes i would like to see some numbers from daves truck on a dyno, that would be very interesting, to see some of the new computer controled guys shaking there head in disbelief,
I don't need dyno numbers to see then shaking their heads....or fists.
I have been told I am number 1 many times when I pass newer trucks, at least I think that is what they are motioning when they hold one finger up and shake their hands.
